Anyone more worried about DH/SO while in labor?

My DH is not the ideal candidate for being around blood/guts etc. Unless it's on TV, he avoids it at all costs. I'm worried he will faint or puke when LO decides to enter the world.  I had a C-section due to breech with my first daughter and I didn't want him to go into the operating room for fear of this happening, so he didn't.. I want him to be there (he does too) in the room and watching it this time since I plan to have a VBAC.

Have any of you experienced DH/SO getting sick or passing out while watching you give birth?

  • My hubby is the same way!  We talked to our Doula about it and she made a couple of good points.  Because this is the birth of his child, he's going to be more wrapped up and elated than we think (so will we) and when it does get on the more bloody and gut-sie, the baby is already out and more than likely he will have his eyes on the baby, not what is still coming out of you.

And if you notice his eyes straying, yell at him to keep them on the two of you.

Worse comes to worse, there would be NO better place to pass out but IN a hospital!  Plus, it will be a great story to tell!

DH just looked the other way when I got an IV, left the room for the epi, and then for DS birth just didnt look down there and he made it through.

  • I never really thought about that! Dh is ok with that stuff (I think) but is super emotional! He cried at our wedding rehearsal so I don't know how he will handle the birth of our child. Im thinking about having my mom slip him something, lol.

  • Oh this is the on-going joke for us.  DH passes out at the eye doctor, foot doctor, you name it.  I will say that he has been to every prenatal appointment with me and hasn't even had to leave the room.  I'm confident that he will step up in the delivery room, but we're not going to push our luck and have him cut the cord or anything!
  • My DH doesn't like blood and guts and things like that either.  I think he will be okay, though.  He's standing by my head and not looking. :P  I have a feeling that will change, though.  I think this is going to be a good experience for him and that when it comes down to it, he won't be "afraid". :)

  • I agree with you guys.. I think when it comes down to it, he will be more focused on the baby rather than all the gory details. I think it would be cool to have him cut the cord but like a PP mentioned, I'm not going to push my luck :)
