the unanswerable questions

How do you do tummy time when they can roll over?

How do you put them to bed sleepy but awake when they're not capable of keeping their own pacifier in?  At least if you put them down asleep there is a 40% chance of them staying that way....

Re: the unanswerable questions

  • I've always thought that the point of tummy time was to help them build their muscles.  Once they're rolling over, you can consider it a success.  There is no way to keep them on their tummy if they're rolling over and won't stay on it, hence, the end of "required" tummy time.

And as for the sleepy but awake question, I don't really have an answer, other than to say that I have success laying my baby down when he's sleepy and having him fall asleep on his own.  Let them fidget and squirm, don't worry about the paci, if it falls out and they aren't crying, there's no reason to worry.  If they spit it out and do start crying, I suppose you can just go put it back in (my guy won't use one so I'm not up on the pacifier end of this).  This last part might not be helpful at all.  All I'm really trying to say is that to get them used to going down awake and falling asleep on their own, you just have to keep doing it.  In my experience at least, that's what works.

  • For tummy time: I make putting him back on his tummy part of the game.  He'll hang out, hold his head up, and then figure out how to roll over all over again.  If they have something in front of them to hold their attention, they are also less likely to roll to their back.

On #2: I have no idea!  Honestly, I mostly just let Ben fall asleep and then put him to bed.  He's not in his crib yet, so we'll probably end up working on that eventually.  We'll see.
