Baby Names

Laszlo Jude?

DH and I are adopting from Africa, and, even though we don't have a referral yet, I can't stop thinking about boy names.  What do you think?  We both really like old fashioned/family names/non-trendy names.

  • Any significance of this name to you?

If not I would not use it. It seems pretty out there and will always have to be spelled out to people. It doesn't seem terribly traditional to me, but I am not a history professor or anything.

  • Personally, I love it. Jude is getting pretty popular but it's a good name and I absolutely love Laszlo. We have discussed it as a possibility if we have a second son. There's only one way to pronounce it and as someone with a long, non-phonetic ethnic last name, having to spell out your name isn't the end of the world. I say go for it.
  • Jude is ok, but I don't care for Laszlo. I like traditional names too, but this one is not my style

  • I don't know why...  but I REALLY like it.

Like, I could NEVER pull this off, but I would totally love to tell you how much I loved your son's name if we met at the park.

  • Yes I love it!

  • Thanks for all the input ladies!  I also have a long, non-phonetic last name (and had a long non-phonetic maiden name), so I'm not terribly worried about the spelling it out thing.  Besides, I'm constantly spelling out DD#2's name (Lorelei) anyway, and it's the traditional spelling!  :)  I think we may have found it!

  • I like Laszlo. Sure, it's very different, but it's a real name, not completely unheard of, it's easy to pronounce and spell. Laszlo Jude flows. Laz is cool nm. As for Jude, that's what I named my kid, so you know, I think it's pretty awesome.

  • I am watching Golden Girls right now and that is the name of the sculpter who used Dorothy, Blanche and Rose as his models.  It isn't a name I would use, but I kind of like it :)
  • I like Laszlo, but I am 1/2 Eastern European, so it doesn't seem totally out there to me.  I also like Jude, and I think it's a little more universal for a child who was born in Africa and raised in the United States; however, if neither his first, nor his last (I am assuming) name will recognize his African heritage, maybe you could hold off on a middle name until you know more about the region/culture of his birth.

  • I love it. Obviously, I have a love for names from classic movies. I thought of Casablanca right away and I don't even care that it's a LN.

    I love Jude. It's a great name.

I am not feeling Laszlo. Can't really put my finger on it. Seems "off" for a child of African heritage. What popped in my mind was Enzo instead. Not sure why.

I do agree with PP that it might be good to incorporate the child's current name or something reflective of his culture of heritage before picking a final name. A double-middle name would also be appropriate in this situation.

Best of luck with your adoption. Here's to a speedy referral.
