At DD's 12 month well check, the doctor told us we could switch from formula to whole milk. She also told us that we should give her no more than 15 oz. of whole milk vs. the 18-20 oz. of formula we'd been giving her. AND- she should have it out of a cup. Not a sippie cup, a regular cup.
DD has just gotten the hang of drinking water out of a sippie cup thing but she still spills a bunch down the front of her-- like the water is coming out too fast for her to swallow it! I've tried helping her with a regular cup, but she doesn't get it yet. We're still practicing. So, I'm sticking with the bottle for now.
?How do I start to wean her from the bottle AND cut back on the amount of milk she's getting. I know it is just a few ounces, but she is super grumpy in the afternoons and seems hungry. A couple of times that she won't stop crying, I've given in and given her a few ounces of formula, and she sucks it down like she's starving.
She isn't as interested in her solid food these days and pretty much refuses to let me feed her purees. She doesn't want to sit still long enough to eat! Ugh-- so many frustrations! Any advice from anyone??
Re: 1 year feeding adjustments- HELP!!
First off - my kid was using a cup with a lid until well past his third b-day. Give her the sippy cup, I don't know where your doc got that idea.
Remember...milk is to be offered as a beverage only now, not as a source of nurtition. She doesn't need purees at all any more, just regular table food. Just keep offering different things, and don't fight with her. She'll eat when's she's hungry.
aubrey eats every 3 hours, pretty much.
7am - bkfst with milk cup
9:30 - snack with water cup
12:30 - lunch with milk cup
3:30pm - snack with water cup
6:30pm - dinner with milk cup
and she has her water cup available all day as she plays.
aubrey's eating a snack right now.
i sit her in her rocking chair with a graham cracker and a sippy cup of water. if she's really hungry, she'll sit there and eat. if she's less hungry, she'll crawl around with the graham cracker in one hand. sometimes, she puts it down and comes back to it later. but it does eventually get eaten.
other snacks: gerber stars, gerber fruit bars (like nutrigrain bars), gold fish (i LOVE the snack cups that prevent spills), cheerios, half a banana, cheese stick, yogurt melts, a biscuit.... basically anything she can feed herself.
the reason I'm sure your ped said cup instead of sippy cup was 1) better for the teeth, and 2) better for speech development. For speech development, though, a straw cup is better than a regular sippy, so you can try that. And really, it is much easier to use the sippy when your kid is walkin.g around, so go ahead and use that.
And personally, Julia often throws her cups, so much easier to give her a sippy or straw cup. Elena still carries her water around in her straw cups. We just always have water available to her, and cups that don't spill are wonderful, even at 3 years old.
And as pp said, just go ahead and stop the purees. Feed her table food now. That often makes for LONG meals, but she'll probably enjoy feeding herself and eat then. Julia never really ate purees ever -- she wanted texture.

got it -- it had just sounded initially that she was still just on purees. All's I got then is to just keep offering and trying. They say kids her age only have a 15-minute span to eating while seated at the table, which really is awfully short. I'm having some of the same struggles with Julia -- she is fighting me on eating anything that isn't noodles, the little stinker.

If it helps - when Jakob was little he never had set meal or snack times. Whenever he was hungry, I gave him something to eat.
Some people might think that's a bad idea, but I've never had a problem getting him to eat or with him being a picky eater. Sometimes you throw the books away and just do what works
Do you give her a spoon and let her try to feed herself the yogurt/oatmeal, etc? I always handed each of the twins one spoon to hold and "feed themselves" with, while I still held a spoon as well and would shovel in bites here and there. Now granted, it took them a while to learn to effectively feed themselves, but they still enjoyed that feeling of independence. They were really fascinated with it and became much more interested in sitting in their highchairs again... just an idea, in case you aren't doing that already.
Good luck.

Remember that what your pedi says is JUST a suggestion. You don't have to do anything you don't want to! If you want to use a sippy or straw cup - do it. Abby knows "how" to use a regular cup but it's just not worth the struggle at this point to do it all the time.
Caroline fights the high-chair too. At first I was chasing her around the house trying to feed her ... but that grew tiresome fast. Now I give her something to play with (mac and cheese box that she can shake and a spoon to bag on it with seem to work the best). Maybe try that!
Otherwise, I'm not sure what to tell you. Caroline fights different stuff every week. This week all she wants is cheese and bread. Two weeks ago all she wanted where jar veggies. I just keep trying and keep praying she gets the nutrition she needs.
