Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Nearly 8 months old and chokes/gags a lot (posted on 6-9 as well)

I am still just doing purees with LO and give him mum mums as well- but nearly every time he has a mum mum we end up having to fish it out because he starts to choke. My older son at this age was eating cheerios, puffs, gold fish etc without issues ever. I am just not confident in my baby to be eating those things- any ideas or tips? I know practice helps. thanks!

Every baby is different. My little guy is going to be one on friday and just last week started to eat puffs and mum mums with out gagging. He still mostly eats purees and breast milk. This week he has eaten a couple of cherrios and little pieces of toast.

He will get there. My pedi said if my lo was still gagging/choking on anything with texture at 12 months we could see a speech therapist for an evaluation, but she told me not to worry and that he would get there. Slowly we are getting there and I'm sure you will too.

    Good luck!

  • At 8 months, DD was definitely still gagging on her puffs and such. I definitely would not worry, like PP said, every baby is different.Once DD figured it out, she was completely fine- like a light switch turned on.  You're doing all the right things, he will definitely get the hang of it soon!
  • I only recently started feeling confident giving her Baby Mum Mum's.  She would break off big pieces and try to swallow them.   She's been eating Puffs for a couple of months and even those took some time to get used to.  I would break them into 2 or 3 pieces for her.  I think it def.=happens more with age and practice. :)

  • Nick did this until we gave him real solids. And now he eats like a champ. I think he just hated the purees.

  • We have the choking/gagging problem, too, at 10 months.  He mouths the puffs but spits them out.  Recently, though, he's been on a bit of a "hunger strike" and won't even eat the purees he used to like - he would only eat the smoothest of the purees to begin with.
