Bathtime?

I don't have one of those big, lovely bathtubs at my house, but I've been fantasizing about a long, luxurious soak in one for months. Our closest friends have offered to not only let me, DH and SS come over so I can take a bath tomorrow, but also to feed us dinner. WIN!

This may be a silly question, but since it was never an option for me I never asked my OB. I know as long as my water hasn't broken that infection isn't a risk, but what about bath temperature. Am I limited by how warm the water can be?

Re: Bathtime?

  • I took pretty warm baths throughout my entire pregnancy and never had an issue with it. My midwife knew too and said it was fine, just as long as I didn't raise my internal temp for longer than an hour.

  • I would definitely use mildly warm water, you don't want to get overheated/dehydrated.  We have a jacuzzi tub and I tried a soak a week or two ago, I was disappointed and really uncomfortable (you might want to put something cushy in to sit on, my butt/pelvis hurt so bad sitting on the hard tub I could hardly stand it) and it made me sweaty, so I got out after only 10 or 15 minutes.  A nice cool swimming pool, on the other hand, sounds awesome, lol...

  • At our birthing classes, we were told baths are great during pregnancy. Don't get the water as hot as an outdoor jacuzzi; make sure you are comfortable. (At this point, I don't like the water as hot as I used to b/c I get hot flashes so easily.) Also, be sure that there is someone near enough to hear you when you are ready to get out if you need help. It is amazing how much more difficult it can be to crawl out of the tub now! Enjoy!

  • my midwife said it's fine... your body will tell you if its too hot- if you start to get so hot that you're a bit short of breath, then hop out for a bit and cool down- you should be fine.  I've been taking a million baths

  • Just don't make it hot tub hot - they usually say to avoid those during pregnancy. Otherwise, though, you should definitely make it warm enough to enjoy yourself :) I'm jealous - we only have a stand up shower. I can't wait to live someplace with a real bath tub!

  • Enjoy it and just don't stay in over an hour or keep adding hot water.  Just start with it warm and when it cools just enjoy it.

I take hot baths all the time. My doctor said that they are fine because most of your body is not submerged and because the water in a bath cools down a lot faster than that of a hot tub. Enjoy your bath! :)

  • Don't do hot water, a warm bath is fine and you can stay longer. Keep a water bottle close by in case you get mildly dehydrated.

And I forgot this part...you will definitely want your DH near when it's time to get out, lifting yourself out of a big tub can be pretty impossible...

Agreed!  I've taken a few hot baths this pregnancy and in previous ones. Your body will let you know if you're getting too hot.
