Babies: 9 - 12 Months

My DS is going to be eating purees in college!

Ok, over-exaggeration.  But seriously, we started DS on solids (cereal) at 6 months old and purees at 7 months old.  He took to both beautifully.  He will now also eat puffs, mum-mums and cheerios (and yogurt but that's like puree).  But that's IT!  I've tried small pieces of fruit, bread, noodles, veggies... he instantaneously grabs it out of his mouth and throws it away from him.

Any advice?  Do I just keep trying every day?  I'm starting to worry only because I'm not sure how long daycare will be willing to spoon feed him....

  • Just keep trying everyday.  Some babies take longer than others.  My DS is turning one this week and is just now finally starting to try a lot more things.  The only finger foods he would eat for the last few months were puffs, cheerios and yogurt melts.  Then he tried and LOVED graham crackers and nutrigrain bars, and beans. Just keep tossing stuff on his tray.  I was thinking that he would never try new things and now he's finally branching out.  Your DS will when he is ready!

  • Just keep trying. He will eventually get it. My DD has been on all table food since 7 months old and she doesn't refuse anything so I don't really have any experience to give you, but have you thought about maybe sitting down in front of DS and eating a banana or something like that with him?? They learn things from watching us so maybe it might help!

  • I feel the same way about meat purees - my kid will shovel everything into his mouth himself...but needs his chicken/turkey/beef pureed.
  • Just keep trying we had trouble too and then one day DD just chewed up what I gave her and swallow it.  We haven't looked back since.

Also what helped a lot was giving her some of our dinner while we ate.  She liked having some of our dinner (off my plate).  If we didn't give her some she would sit there and chew while we ate.

I was lurking.  My little man was anti table food until about 10-11 months, except for puffs and stuff.  Now, he loves feeding himself.  I just kept trying and try different textures.

  • What if you dip a solid food in a puree he loves?

  • It's such a comfort that you posted this because I was starting to feel alone in this department! I feel like everyone's baby on here is eating 5 course meals with no problem and I still have to bust out my Baby Bullet every few days.

She will only eat purees, yogurt, and puffs. She used to eat a variety of fruit and veggie purees but now I find that I have to hide her veggies in her fruit. She's become a rather picky eater when it comes to taste and texture and I'm getting frustrated.

I would recommend trying solids every few days. Good luck to you! I feel your pain.

This is us! DS LOVES to eat but has no desire to feed himself at all. He likes to holda puff in each tightly closed fist and will only eat them if you feed it to him.  I guess he will decide eventually to take a bite from himself.  Trying not to stress just yet!

  • Keep at it, don't give up!!

It took my boy a while as well to get used to eating cereal puffs, mum mums and 3rd food gerber. We have been finally giving him tidbits here and there of what we eat and he is liking it but will not eat a lot of it. I do feel the same as well though about the whole puree thing since he is not learning how to pick food up all that well. Also MIL doesn't try with him when she takes care of him during the week "fearing he may choke"... it's why it took us so long to finally get him into eating chunkier food and he is very picky... I'm not saying it's bad but how else is he ever gonna learn??

I've tried this!  Thought I was being sly.  The little turd freaked out and pulled it out of his mouth.  Only it was messier because puree was everywhere too, haha.

  • Thanks for all of the suggestions (and mutual feelings) everyone!  We'll just keep trying!  I'm sure once he is feeding himself I'll be incredibly sad that he's growing up too fast, haha.  So I'll just enjoy every spooning moment until then!  :-)
