TTC After a Loss

talk to me about progesterone

Hello!  I plan on bringing this one up with my OBGYN next week when I see her, but does anyone notice a difference in the LP when using the herbal progesterone cream/lotion?  I have a healthy length LP, being pretty consistently 13 days, but I start spotting around 9dpo and spot up until AF shows up.  I have read that this could be an indication of low/falling levels of progesterone late in your cycle and COULD be problematic when trying to sustain early pregnancy.

If you have been diagnosed with a LPD and treated with progesterone, did you try to lotion/cream first before being given an Rx from your doc?  Did you notice a difference?  If you haven't been diagnosed but are self-treating with the cream/lotion, did you notice?

Re: talk to me about progesterone

  • I did use the natural cream.  It didn't lengthen my luteal phase that I noticed, but after a few months I did notice that I spotted for less days at the end of AF--I have read that spotting at the end of AF could be another indication of a luteal phase problem.  I have not been officially diagnosed but see through charting that this could be an issue for me

I want to ask my dr. about the prescription and see if it might make more of a difference. But the cream was easy and it really did seem to make a diffeence with spotting.

I wouldn't advise OTC home remedies for hormone related issues. I'd suggest you ask to be referred to an RE for assessment so they can determine what type of supplement you would need, how long you would need it and in what for (pill, suppository, injection or cream).

Since progesterone is needed to maintain any pregnancy I'd suggest getting it looked at and looked after by the right specialist. When it comes to fertility, I never recommend an OB. Always an RE.

Also, your OB may tell you to take Clomid for this. Clomid produces better quality eggs, therefore leading to higher levels of progesterone. Don't do it!!! Don't take fertility drugs from an OB! They hand them out like candy. And certainly don't take them unless you've been diagnosed.

There is only one way to diagnose LPD - 7DPO bloodwork.

Hope this doesn't sound too preachy - I've been around infertility for awhile now!

You don't sound preachy, you sound experienced/informed!  Thanks for the advice.  I guess I wasn't really thinking about asking her for an Rx for it, but more asking if she thought it would be a problem/worth doing some testing or getting referred to an RE.  I believe there is an RE at her practice, there are something like 14 different doctors working out of the same building, all of them specializing in women's health care of one sort or another.

  • Thank you so much for asking this: I was trying to do some research on natural progesterone creams, too. I'm beginning to suspect I have a short LP. I've only been charting for two-and-a-half cycles so I know it's still way early to call it, but I see a pattern forming here. PPs' answers have been really helpful -- and have confirmed what I knew, that DIY hormonal treatment is never a good idea.

    ~ all ALers welcome ~

  • I did not ever try using progesterone cream.  It crossed my mind for sure, but when I asked my doctor about it she just gave me a Rx (her take is that it can't hurt and since I was charting my BBT she was certain I was Oing and new when to take it).

While on prometrium (oral progesterone), it held off bleeding until 9dpo then I would start full on period at 10dpo.  So not length change in LP, but less spotting.  I woudl also notice a second jump in BBT after starting prometrium, it definitely raised my temps.

While using progesterone suppositories, my LP has gotten longer and again my temps while on it were higher.
