Anyone Anemic?

Positive: I passed my glucose test

Negative: I'm now anemic and have to take iron supplements.  I haven't done my research yet but wondering if anyone else became anemic during pregnancy? Is there anything I need to know?

My tests also showed a high white blood cell count. I'm not sick nor fighting any infection (that I know of) so they are going to recheck that at my next visit in 2 weeks.

Re: Anyone Anemic?

  • Same here. I started my iron a few days ago. My H &H weren't too low but the Dr.explained that because of blood loss during birth they'd prefer levels at high normal. Anemia is fairly common in pregnancy which is why we're all screened for it.

There are a ton of us on the board. Take your iron as your dr prescribed and you'll be fine!

This.  My OB just said to take a daily iron supplement, nothing to be too concerned about.

I also passed the 1-hour but was very slightly anemic. I was told to just take the SlowFE brand of supplement and increase my fiber since it can cause constipation, which I'm already dealing with. I take 2 colace a day, but may try Miralax instead after discussing it with my doctor.

I've been both pregnancies.  It's really important to stay on top of it if you want an epidural (or so I've heard), and to avoid a transfusion after delivery.  I was *this* close to needing a transfusion with my son.

I take additional iron on top of my prenatal.  Be sure to avoid taking it with milk/calcium as it'll absorb it instead of your body.  Take it with Vitamin C/OJ.  Another suggestion is to take your prenatal the opposite time of day as the iron.  I've also heard the liquid supplements are easier to digest and won't leave you constipated.  I take it with a light snack so it doesn't make me nauseous.  Nothing too heavy.

     GL! :)

  • Yes. Like you I passed the glucose test, but found out I've got low hemoglobin levels. I just picked up a slow-release iron supplement (Target up and up brand) and take 1 per day along with my prenatal.

I take an iron supplement 2-3 times/week because there is no way I could take one every day...I'd never poop again

  • I also found out I am anemic.  I started my iron pills and feel so much better!  I am taking the slow release pills.  They are fine on my stomach.

    This and this.

I have been taking iron since about week 16, just make sure you eat prunes or the like - iron can be rough on your system.

My doc also said to take the supplement with something acidic, like orange juice, because milk or other bases will hinder the absorption.

  • I have been borderline anemic my entire life, so when I got pregnant it of course became full on anemia. With DD it was so bad I passed out at work and had to be put on medical leave way early and that trend went through to my pregnancy with DS and now with this LO. I take my regular prenatal plus 2 iron supplements a day and sometimes I need to take 3. I have still gotten an epidural with both previous births and as long as nothing drastic happens or I stop taking my supplements all together, I should be able to get an epidural this time around as well.

  • Exact same result with me - GD = negative, low iron = positive.

Had it with my previous pregnancies, NBD... I just have to take a good iron supplement and all should be fine.

T & P for the other issue! Hopefully it'll all be resolved before your next test.

  • Yep, got the double news last week that I passed the 1-hour glucose but was anemic. Doctor said to take iron and also Colace to prevent the (apparently inevitable) constipation iron supplements cause.

I had been getting fatigued in the middle of the day for the two weeks before I started taking the iron, and that seems to have stopped since I've been taking it, so I won't complain. Wink
