Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Nap time routine struggles

For a long looooong time, my DS would only nap in my arms. I SAH, so it wasn't a huge issue, and I loved the snuggle time we had together. About a month ago, I transitioned him into his crib for naps and it has gone a lot better than I expected. For his morning nap routine, I turn on the white noise, change his diaper, put him in a sleep sack, read him a story and then lay him down. He normally fusses for <5 minutes before he falls asleep.

Recently, he has started fussing as soon as I walk towards his nursery with him. He cries throughout his diaper change and whimpers through his whole story. I know they say that babies crave routines, but this routine seems to be working him up more than it's calming him down. Should I change his routine? What would you change?

My DD starting doing this when we were putting her down too soon.  We moved her nap time back an hour and she was fine.  I'm not sure if that would work for you.  Maybe your DS is just super smart already Smile

  • My daughter started this about a week ago. If we even go near her room she starts getting fussy. She has napped/slept in her crib, perfectly fine, for 3 months. I'm thinking/hoping it's just a phase. I have always put her down a little sleepy, but awake. I'm not going to disrupt the routine. We don't have set times but she does take a morning nap (although she's been trying to drop it lately), and an afternoon nap.

  • Mine started doing something like this a little while back, they'd start whimpering and whining as soon as I put them on the changing table to put them in their sleep sack. I don't remember why it started, but we just kept to the routine and they stopped doing it, it was gradual I guess because I don't remember when! If they were really fussy I knew they were tired and just put them straight in their cribs to fuss it out and get to sleep
