Babies: 9 - 12 Months

9 months, Infant vs Toddler Formula?

DD is 8 months and she takes Enfamil Infant (the yellow tub) but I noticed that they have Toddler formula for babies, starting at 9 months. Its a fair amount cheaper but I'm wondering if I should just keep her on the infant formula until she is 12 months or is the Toddler stuff equally as good? Anyone checked them out?

I know at 12 months people say it isn't necessary to keep them on formula (unless directed by a pediatrican)

I know at 1 year we can switch to whole milk, and I'll probably ask the Pediatrician about the Toddler formula but I am just curious what others know/think

Re: 9 months, Infant vs Toddler Formula?

  • I haven't hear much about switching them to it before the year but I know my pedi has told me that he can just stay on infant formula until he is one year. Then he suggested he switch over to whole milk. I'm not sure but I thought the toddler formula was for babies that may be lactose intolerant?? I'm just assuming...

  • We switched from Enfamil gentle ease (purple) to the regular enfamil toddler formula. I know they make a gentle ease in the toddler formula, but I couldn't find it in the store and didn't feel like searching all over for it.

It's cheaper than the infant formula.

I *think* it's more milk based than the infant, which supposedly makes the transition to wcm easier.

Fwiw she started the toddler formula last week and I never discussed the change with her Dr. I brought it up with him today at her well visit and he said it's totally fine.

It's up to you if you want to switch.

  • My Pedi said it was fine to use as it is cheaper but reccommended against as it's just one more transition to make and then worry about any problems.

He told me I'm better off just using the formula I already do and slowly introducing cow milk at 11 months.

  • I compared the cans at the store and there are hardly any differences. We only substitute a bottle or two a day so we went with it because of the huge price difference. this was at 10 months.
  • It is cow-milk based just like most infant formulas. Even if you switch, the transition to WCM will likely be easy (as your LO has already been digesting cow milk for months down, just in formula form).

I've kept him on the infant one.   We get our formula at Costco and they only sell the infant one there.   Plus I don't care for the ingredients in the toddler one.   It has corn syrup in there and I'm not a fan of that.

Almost all of the name brand formulas have corn syrup or another sort of sweetener like it in there.  Costco is Similac Advance, just repackaged.

Earth's Best doesn't use corn syrup either, but it also just had a huge recall about 6 months ago because the cane syrup they use was contaminated.

I didn't make myself clear.   I don't use the Costco brand formula.   I just the regular old Enfamil infant stuff...which we purchase at Costco.

I know formulas have sweetener in them.   I don't mind lactose(which is what is in the Enfamil infant).   But the toddler one has lactose and corn syrup.  Just wasnt' overly thrilled when I saw that.   Personal preferance.   Add that to the fact that they didn't sell the toddler one at my Costco....so we stuck with the plain old yellow tub.
