Carpal tunnel/ulnar nerve discomfort

I've been experiencing the pain, swelling, and numbness in my hand, elbow, and upper arm for about a month now. It's a million times worse during the night. I've tried propping my arm and sleeping a bunch of different ways to alleviate the pain  and discomfort. Does anyone have any suggestions or could share what has helped them?

Re: Carpal tunnel/ulnar nerve discomfort

  • I had carpal tunnel with DD and it would not go away no matter what I tried. Some people have said a brace has helped them...

  • Unfortunately, nothing is helping mine either. It makes washing my hair in the AM really annoying!

Do you remember how long it took for the symptoms to subside? I hope that it doesn't interfer with caring for DS!

Right! It takes me forever to shower because of all the breaks I need to take for my arm!

  • I had this with DD and it lasted about 6 weeks post partum too.  Nothing really helped unfortunately.  With this pregnancy I get numbness and tingling in my hands and fingers off and on.  I am worried it will turn into all the time.  For what it is worth though, a brace and icy hot made it feel a little better.

Ive been getting adjusted by a chiropractor for about six weeks now and wear the braces at night. I had it with DD1, didn't see a chiro or wear braves, and it was MUCH worse. I don't remember exactly how long PP it took to go away.

  • Try biofreeze and massage - although double check biofreeze is safe during pregnancy. I used to work at a massage place and we had many clients come in with the same problem. This seemed to work great for them.

    Best of luck!

  • I had terrible carpal tunnel before getting pregnant - I was worried about a reoccurence with the pregnancy, but have been lucky so far (though I recently developed "tennis elbow").

Regular massage, accupuncture and wearing wrist braces to sleep in really helped me.  So did being active.   The accupuncturist told me there's a fine line between too much activity exacerbating the problem, and not enough activity.  And he was right.

The biggest relief came from the wrist braces, so if I were you I would get some and see if it helps.   It just let me sleep, which was such a relief.  Second biggest help was biweekly massage, but I recognize that's not possible for everyone if you don't have a good benefits package at work.

  • My dr told me to get Carpel tunnel braces for my wrists, to keep some of the fluid away from my nerves! It really helps!!! They have super padded ones if your only planning on wearing them at night (their a ton more comfortable) Hope it helps you as much as it helped me!
