How did you start LO on non-puree meats?

Please help!  I'm so frustrated, and DH is no help on this.  I don't know how to start giving B non-puree meats.

Baby B is great with most finger foods - he's all into crackers, puffs, the Gerber crunchies, yogurt drops, and he'll eat fruits and veggies like it's his job.  The very instant it's meat, though...no way.  I've resorted to letting him eat his fruits and veggies in finger foods, and feeding him stage 2 meat/protein purees along with his dinner.  He absolutely refuses even the stage 3 chunkier meat stuff.

Has anyone tried the Gerber pickups that are ravioli - like the chicken and carrot ones?  Do you think those would work, since he shovels in the fruit and veggie pickups if I don't have time to make my own?  What did you guys do to start LO on meats as finger foods?

Re: How did you start LO on non-puree meats?

  • I just cut some chicken or pork into strips and let him have at it.  When you say you don't have time to make your own, do you mean purees?  I honestly wouldn't bother with those at this point (I'm assuming he's 10-11 months old?  I would just give him whatever meat you guys are eating.  If he doesn't take to it right away, no big deal.  He can get protein from other sources.

  • Yeah, B will turn 11 months this weekend.  I don't make purees anymore, but if I have time, I still try to make him more/better fruits and veggies than we normally eat ourselves.

So you stopped the meat purees when you started offering the chicken/pork strips?  I'm just worried he won't eat them, and if I don't give the purees, he won't get enough protein.  DH thinks I'm crazy for worrying about it, and is fine giving him meat purees, since my niece never even starting taking to finger foods until she was 14 or 15 months.  I just feel like he can do it since he shovels in everything else, and is choosing not to with the meat!

  • I never use pureed meats so I just give them small cut bites of whatever meat I'm serving for dinner.

  • We never gave him pureed anything.  He's eaten solid foods, chicken and pork strips included, right from the start.  Before a year, he doesn't need anything more than BM or formula.  He'll get all the protein he needs from that assuming he is consuming enough each day.  Maybe try some ground beef or turkey or try preparing it different ways.  N eats wraps and quesadillas a lot.  You can hide meat in there as well.

  • We never did puree meat (it just sketches me out somehow!) We don't eat a lot of meat ourselves, so it wasn't convenient to offer him any. I don't think he tried any until probably 8-9 months.

I find ground meat easiest- ground beef, chicken, turkey. I made him turkey meatballs with veggie puree and breadcrumbs- these were a hit and easy to make a big batch and freeze. He will also eat strips of roast chicken, or shreds of crockpot meat, but he seems most interested in the ground variety.

Dont worry about him not getting enough protein.  I was paranoid about it myself and so I looked up how much protein babies need daily.  They need like 16 grams a day and one 8oz. bottle of milk is like 8 gr. of protein.  So if your lo is drinking formula/bm and/or milk, he should be covered.  Theres also a decent amount of protein in cheese, yogurt and eggs.

  • I'm pretty sure DD got solid meat before pureed meat. Are you offering plain meat or with some sort of flavor? Chicken cooked in olive oil with garlic is a favorite for DD. Maybe you could try a stir fry with all the meat and veggies mixed together with low sodium soy sauce or something similar. But, like PP said, I wouldn't stress too much about it. There are lots of other ways to get protein. Just keep offering it over and over and your LO may eventually catch on.

Our DD has never liked meat and we did the same thing...gave her pureed meat and then finger foods everything else. Hovwever, like PPs have said, I was told to just keep trying them. Tonight, for the first time, she couldn't get enough meatloaf. We just made a basic meatloaf and she absolutely loved it! Maybe it was because the meat was softer, or maybe she is finally taking to burger.  I don't know. She does like shredded chicken though.  Also, like PP said, we've put it in quesadillas before as well. She'll get it.  GL!

  • We never gave DS pureed meat. We let him try turkey on Christmas so he was just over 6 months old and he did great with chewing it up and loved it!! He's been loving all kinds of meat since. I guess all you can do is continue to offer it and just make sure he's getting a good amount of protein from other foods.

  • Everything Gym said.  Don't be afraid to give him solid chunks, especially if he has teeth.  He will lead you and let you know what he is ready for.  Good luck!
  • DD is pretty picky with meat.  Sometimes she eat it, sometimes not.  I try and give her other things with protein - beans are her favorite non meat protein.
