I am scheduled on thursday for one because I cannot have an epidural. Anyone want to share their experiences with general anesthesia during a c section. I am so nervous about it.
I had to have general anesthesia...my spinal failed to work...so it wasn't planned.
Waking up for me was the hardest part!! The pain meds didn't kick in yet so I woke up in agony. Not to scare you but if i had know I would have asked they started the morphine drip eariler, but I really don't know if that would have helped. It was not the way I wanted to meet my son for the first time but the pain meds kicked in fairly quickly. I will just never forget waking up feeling like that...not fun.
I was also shivering so badly...due to one to the medications so that didn't help the pain.
Hopefully you will have a better experience. But my son was born healthy so that is all that matters!!:
I have to be put under right after the baby is born. So it is in the middle of my sections this happens. Next time I am curious if they will do it to begin with.I have an illness called Myasthenia Gravis and for some reason I get breathing problems in the middle.
Anyway. I will say I don't really remember much about the first day. I had no pain like the previous poster when I woke up. My pain management at the hospital was at was great. The nurses were right on everything.
I do remember my husband and the nurse that was sitting with me talking and me not opening my eyes yet. However, that is about it. It wasn't scary or anything. I was kind of just too tired to open my eyes. Otherwise I just don't remember much from the first day. It is foggy. After that I remember
I saw the baby once I was out of recovery.
I also don't remember being put to sleep or anything like that.
Due to previous back surgery I have/had to be under GA. In my experience the worst part was being prepped while awake. That was weird. When I woke up I don't remember being in a lot of pain. I do remember struggling to be with it so I could see my DD. The poor recovery nurse. I kept asking her questions, like Does she have hair? How big is she? ect.
I was put under to have my c-section due to scoliosis and not being able to get in the spinal.Waking up was the WORST!It felt like I had knives still in my stomach (not to scare you, butI wish someone would have told me). They can?t start morphine until you wake up so those first 15-20 minutes are AWFUL! But once they start the pain meds it gets much more tolerable?in fact I spent most of the day sleeping and out of it.I had a very hard time accepting that everyone else got to hold and see DD before I did (this might not be the case for you since you know you are going under). I don?t remember the first time I held her, or saw her, or breastfed her.I was SO out of it.But I recovered great and had a healthy baby so everything was worth it.
I had to have emergency C-section under GA due to rapidly dropping low platelet count. I was extremely nervous due to never having GA or any type of surgical procedure. The prep was a little awkward, a catheter was placed into my bladder while I was awake to decrease to amount of time that I was under. I do not remember much except the anesthesiologist telling me that I was getting some medications and then being in recovery. My husband said that I was in a lot of pain when I initially got to recovery but I do not remember this. The next few hours after that were a little bit of a blur but I remember seeing my beautiful daughter and my husband. This was my first pregnancy and it was definitely not in my birth plan, I went to the MD for my 40 week appointment thinking that I was going to be going home, was not prepared. In the end I know that it was the safest option for me to be able to deliver my daughter. I hope this helps.
Emergency GA c/s. It took me a total of 3 hours to wake up fully. My husband said that I woke up a couple times prior and he showed me pictures of our son but I do not remember that. Once I was awake they rolled me into my room and brought my son in. All in all, in regards to the GA, it was easy. I had no adverse reactions and once I actually woke up I just felt slightly groggy and a little drugged. When I was in my room that is when they handed my my son. I did not have any problems functioning so I was able to hold him solo.
I had an emergency c-section under general. It was my 1st time being put under and I was sort of glad I had no time to think about it. I was actually intubated while I was still awake (not a good memory).
However, I have since been put under for 3 other surgeries since having ds. In my experience, being put under general has not been bad at all. They prep me with an IV and once they are ready to bring me in, I get some valium and I feel very relaxed. The OR is usually pretty cold and they give you a lot of blankets to stay warm. I usually remember them talking to me a little bit and the next thing I will remember is waking up after surgery. I am usually in a bit of pain, but it becomes managed with meds.
Good luck.

Ladies, thank you so much for all your advice. I think I know what to expect a little more now. Sigh! So nervous!
Thanks again so much!
