June 2012 Moms

hospital bag

Hi Ladies! I hope everyone is doing alright! Just wondering what some of your "shoulda thought about that" hospital bag goodies??

I've got the basics... clothes, toiletries, camera, charger, I'm bringing my laptop bc my mom is going to be skyping in, so I have my music on there.

I've got the diaper bag all packed too with some outfits, diapers, some wipes, a couple of rattle toys... and I'm bringing my boppy pillow bc I do plan on breast feeding.

What else?? Are your husband staying with you both nights your in the hospital?? Should I pack stuff for him or let him go home every now and then to get freshen up? I dont want to pack my whole house! But we live about an hour away from the hospital so I wanna make sure we have what we need.

Re: hospital bag

  • I'm no pro and still really haven't packed my bag but a few things some ladies on here have mentioned that are key are Chapstick, hair ties, and some snacks.

    Good luck:)

  • Up to you but you really don't need diapers and wipes, the hospital provides them and gives you some to take home. Also you dont really need toys, a newbkrn doesnt have any interest. Just an idea so you dont have to lug so much stuff.

  • I am also a FTM, but I totally recommend a cute headband or scarf.  Even if you are not particularly vain (like me), there are just so many pictures and so little time to get cute.  Also, I have long hair and picture it annoying me during labor.

Depends on your hospital..mine provides enough "baby gear" for less than one full day and requests that we bring enough of all of this stuff for at least two more days (in case of C section).

OP, double check with your hospital on what they provide :)

  • chapstick, hair ties, i preferred gatorade over ice chips.  I also brought fruit snacks.  The real sweet flavor helped with nausea and they had enough sugar to give you an energy boost.

Personally I brought my own pillow for after delivery.  Hospital pillows bite and I couldn't stand it.  It was nice afterwards to trade out to my pillow from home and snuggle down.

I also brought a snuggly blanket from home for afterwords.  I tend to be cold and again it was nice to have something besides scratchy hospital blankets.

To my boys:  I will love you for you Not for what you have done or what you will become I will love you for you I will give you the love The love that you never knew
  • Chapstick, 100%.  If I could only bring one thing to the hospital, chapstick would be it.  Your lips get so dried out from the ice chips & breathing, I would have gone insane without it.

Also hair ties for ponytails and/or headbands, you'll likely be sweaty and want to get your hair out of your face.  And having your own pillow is also a good idea, hospital pillows suck.

I personally wouldn't want DH driving 2 hours round trip multiple times, especially on potentially little or no sleep, to go home to get things, so I would have him bring his overnight stuff too, at least a change of clothes/toothbrush etc.

you don't need rattles.  A newborn won't use them.  And agree the hosipital will provide diapers and wipes.

  • I'm not an expert either but some people suggested bringing breast pads. I believe I heard some say that their milk didn't come in right away while others said the pads were a god send. I bought some just in case!

Speaking of pads.... Hospitals do provide maxi pads but they're super large and heavy. You'll probably need the super large and heavy ones but I also want some good absorbent ones that are a little thinner which I can use for the discharge home.  I plan on either wearing a flowy summer dress or yoga pants home and I know I'll feel more comfortable with a non diaper like pad on.

As for the rest... I keep reading away to get a better idea.. but I'm not overdoing it too much.

Make up too perhaps? I don't mean to sound vain but I know a little something might make me feel better after all the craziness that will ensure. I might also bring an extra pair of contacts, contact solution and make up remover pads. If I cry, sweat and all that jazz i'll want to remove it all at some point if I care to.

  • My hospital said to be sure to bring hats for fhe baby, hand mits, and socks to keep baby warm as they dont provide any of those
  • My hospital doesn't really have a packing list that I can find, so I asked other moms I know who labored there. I figure every place is different, so it helps to know what to expect from your own individual hospital. Thanks to them, I will definitely be bringing gowns, an extra pillow for me, and a pillow for DH, but I probably won't worry about towels.

Also, our cousin who has delivered 4 babies suggested taking stool softeners during labor or right after to ease the pain/discomfort of bm. (A second cousin backed her up on this as a MAJOR help after L&D.) I asked my OB about this and she said the hospital will provide it; however, you might want to ask about yours.

Two things I'm tossing in this time around are a small book with big pictures to be able to read to the baby (one that has bright black and white pictures) and an infant nail file--my hospital won't do anything about fingernails and if LO has long nails I don't want him/her scratching.
