Natural Birth

Well I gave it my best shot

Gioacchino "Gino" Paul was born at 3:38 this morning. Yesterday I posted about constant right sided pain and swelling. After a sleepless night Saturday, I went in for labs and monitoring, and everything was fine. We weren't out of the hospital 30 minutes, when I got SLAMMED with contractions every 3 minutes, lasting 1.5 minutes with awful back labor in between that never let up. So essentially no breaks in between contractions.

We get back to the hospital with me feeling silly. I'm 3cm, 100% and 0 station. I labor in the tub, on the ball, swaying for 4 hours. Contractions every 2 minutes, back labor constantly. No breaks. I'm 5cm. MW says my LEEP 4 years ago made too much scar tissue, and I need baby head pushing on my cervix to stretch it. I agreed to be ruptured. If possible, pain gets worse. 4 more hours, I'm 8cm....and that's where I stayed for EIGHT hours. No progress. Made it through about 10 contractions with Pitocin when I gave DH the code word for the epidural. MW was afraid I'd be too exhausted to push and end up with a c-section, and I honestly would have been. They just bolused me. I took a nap while getting Pit full blast, woke up 2 hours later, they turned off the epi, and I pushed little man out in an hour.

I am a little disappointed, because I feel like I put in a lot of work before the epi and still ended up getting it. But Gino is happy and healthy, went to breast immediately like a champ, and is such an alert little guy. Mission accomplished.

  • 8 hours at 8 cm! That's rough! Congrats on making it so far and getting that solid work put in before the Epi. I'm sorry that it's been disappointing for you. There is definitely a place for interventions in labor and delivery and it sounds like you used the interventions very appropriately. You did great work mama! Congratulations on your new little one!
  • Congrats Momma! You did great, you never know how long and hard labor can last until you are there. Be proud of all your hard work!
  • Congrats!!! What a cool, Italian name your little guy has!

Try not to think about it negatively, I know I did. But remember that without the opportunity to relax and rest you could have ended up with a C-section. I know we all want natural births and tend to feel like we failed if it doesn't go that way but really the motivation for natural birth is a healthy happy baby and if the epi gave you that result than you were successful. Congratulations!
