All day today DD has had rosy cheeks and has been tugging at her left ear. She ha no fever and isn't acting like anything is wrong. She actually hasn't cried or fussed once today.
When I was worried about an ear infection, I read somewhere (thanks, Dr. Google...) that infants can't really localize pain until after about 12 months. Sometimes ear tugging can be related to teething, as they "think" the pain from teething is coming from their ears. I think this was the case for my fellas, as there's been much ear tugging, no ear infections, and 4 teeth.
TTC for 3 years. Finally successful after 5 IUIs and 2 cycles of IVF. Our amazing twins were born 5 weeks early on 8/16/11. Found out April 2012 that our di/di twins are ID.
I feel sort of like an expert when it comes to ear infections and pre-diagnosing them, since B has had over 10, and had to get tubes this week.
Look at baby when she's napping - is she trying to sit up while she's sleeping? Pressure hurts on the ear, and babies try to make it stop even when they're sleeping. B always did that when ears were starting to bother him. As soon as that happened, I'd call the ped.
Other ear infection signals were not taking the bottle (sucking hurt too bad), extremely fussy, rubbing his eyes (pressure again), and poking into the ear with a finger, not just tugging on it.
I hope your LO doesn't have an ear infection - they suck.
My little one is just getting over a wicked double ear infection with her left eardrum ruptured. She never had a fever. I ditto everything written in the above post. Looking back, my DD demonstrated a lot of those symptoms (sitting up in the night, fussiness, lots of face/ear rubbing).
I just took DD to the pedi yesterday because I thought she had an ear infection. She has been fussy and hitting her right ear, along with tugging and digging in her ear with her finger. Pedi said her ears were healthy and that it was just teething. She's getting 2 teeth right now. Pedi told us that the nerve for the teeth is connected back by the ears and that's why babies mess with their ears when they're teething. She said give tylenol and frozen veggies/fruit to help.
My girls have had 8 ear infections between them and have never tugged their ears with an infection. They have tugged them with teething. Rosy cheeks are also common with teething, so since it sounds like your LO is acting normally, no fever, I'd say it's probably her teeth.
