Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Avocado?

I've noticed that a lot of people have posted that they have given their LOs avocado as one of the first solids. Is this a common baby food? I have never heard of giving avocado to a baby. Usually it's bananas, peaches, plums, carrots, etc. Do a lot of babies like avocado? I don't like it so it's hard to imagine giving it to DS, though I want him to try a lot of things as his age permits so he can develop his own preferences.

Re: Avocado?

  • I'm not sure what age is recommended. My niece was eating avocados by 6 months though. My sister makes all her baby food and avocado is super easy. We used it for road trips a lot. You can just peel it, smush it a bit, and feed it to them.

  • If it is still hard, then it isn't ripe enough yet.  Ripe avocado can be easily mushed.

  • We just started solids yesterday and we gave our DS avocado first.  Avocado is a great first food because it has a lot of healthy fats that are important for healthy brain development.  And like pp said it is very easy to prepare.  He was a little tentative yesterday but boy did he love every spoonful today!

  • mix bananas and avocado and they will lick it off the spoon.  My DS is only 3 months so he will have to wait a couple of months to try it

DD1  LOVES avocado and she's 2 1/2 now. I started giving it to her at around 8mos. DD2 has had pears, carrots and oatmeal and avocados next on my list. It's super healthy for them and packs a big punch nutrition wise. I'm not a huge fan of it personally and DH hates it, but DD1 will eat half of one during a meal, and when she was being super picky it was one of the most nutritious foods she would eat regularly.
