BPP, NST, and cord around the neck?

So yesterday I had a BPP and NST because my fluid levels are on the low end of normal. The plan was if the fluids were too low, they would have induced me yesterday.  Fluids were still on the low end of normal but because they weren't in the "Low" category, I was sent home.

Well... today my Dr. calls me and says that the ultrasound and NST came back fine (which I already knew) but that LO's cord is around his neck :(   Has anyone else's dr told them this? It kind of freaks me out. Both DH and my sister were born with cords around their neck and from what my mom and MIL said, it was a scary moment in the birth when that happened.

Blah.

  • I think it's very normal like pp said the dr just unwraps it during delivery. The dr may be worried since your fluid is low that it may be a problem I'd ask next time you see the dr.

  • With my first she had it around her neck. I never knew ahead of time and actually no one told me until after the birth. When her head was out the doctor had me stop pushing and said it was really important I wait (they didnt want me to freak out). My mom and husband told me after they were adjusting the cord. She was fine and there were no problems!
  • Thanks, ladies :)

  • I know someone who delivered vaginally recently with the cord around the neck 3 times! With no problems at all. My girls is supposedly wrapped once but loose, so it might just slide off her as she goes down the canal. Its normal and normally not a big problem!

  • I think it's one of those things that sounds incredibly scary but is actually quite common! But as pp mentioned, definitely ask your doctor about it to get some peace of mind.

I am surprised your doctor freaked you out by telling you; maybe he is trying to justify inducing you early? My DS1 was born with the cord around his neck. It is very common.

DS1 had umbilical cord wrapped around his neck twice

DS2 had umbilical cord wrapped around his neck 3 times.

It's okay to deliver a baby this way. They just unwrap it when their head comes out.

From what I've experienced in L&D as a student it is generally something that they remedy pretty quickly once the head is delivered.  I've seen 3 different, vaginal deliveries where the OB or MW would just ask the mom to stop pushing once the head was out, slip the cord over and continue delivering the shoulders and body.

I would talk to your OB if you're having any concerns about it.

Hope you have a safe delivery!

This.  My daughter's cord was wrapped twice... The OB just had me stop pushing briefly while she unwrapped it.
