Iron Absorption

A little over a month ago our pedi had us do a routine iron test. It came back slightly low. She put my LO on a supplement (2x per day, chased with orange juice and no dairy 30 minutes before or after). This week was our follow up and nothing changed. Now they think he has an absorption issue. He was sent for more bloodwork. They got some of the results today and they didn't show any concerns. The rest of the results will be provided on Tuesday.

Has anyone else dealt with this? Waiting til Tuesday is making me a crazy paranoid mama...and Googling crap isn't helping :-

Re: Iron Absorption

  • No advice, just wanted to say good luck.  Our LO is significantly anemic and is finishing his first month on iron drops and we will recheck his bloodwork in another week.  We're praying for a change and praying for no absorption issues as well.

  • Hey all...my LO was just diagnosed as anemic as well. I haven't started the drops yet because i heard they were hard on the stomach and we just finished antibotics for an ear infection and a tummy virus.

Any issues with either of your babies with upset stomachs?

  • No stomach issues with my son. You are supposed to wipe teeth and gums after giving the drops to prevent staining.

  • the best way to get iron is through meat, esp red meat and livers, iron through meat is so much easier for our bodies to absorb, yes spinich has a LOT more iron volume but we are barely able to absorb a fraction of the iron, it isn't the amount of iron in the food that matters as much as the ability for our bodies to absorb it.

I say if he is still on puree's then puree some livers and or steak and feed it to him 2x a day. If he is on table food then just cut it up really small and try to give it to him that way. If he hates the liver you could probably mix it in some type of smoothy and try that way.

  • My DS started the drops last week & has had an upset stomach. He has a dairy/soy protein intolerance so I wasn't sure if the drops may have something affecting his intolerance or whether the iron is just constipating him a little bit. He's still been pooping, but it's definitely harder & black...typical of iron supplements. I started giving him the drops every other day to see if that helps.
