What are L&D gowns like?

I'm having some confusion about how L&D gowns work. So I'm being induced, unless I go naturally before tuesday, so I'm going to be hooked up to monitors, and I'm certainly planning to get an Epidural. So thats a lot of wires and stuff attached to areas that would be covered by the gown.. do the monitor belts go over your gown or something? Where does the tube for the epidural catheter go?

Also, I really hate wearing things that are tight around the neck. I feel like I'm being choked. Are L&D gowns tight around the neck? If you have a picture of yourself wearing the gown from your hospital it would be super helpful if you posted it here.

  • The monitors go under the gown. A lot of the time the gown ended up being hitched up above the monitors because they adjusted me so much. It has ties but it is still pretty open in the back, so it did not interfere with the epidural at all. And it wasn't tight at all around my neck, it was practically off-shoulder. I hope that helps!

When I first got to the hospital, I didn't get into the gown. I took my pants/undies off and they put 2 monitors on my stomach.  One to montior contractions and one to montior babies heartbeat.  They were held on by this wrap that was held around my belly with velcro. I then also had on my bra and shirt.  Then I had a blanket over my legs.  I stayed like this for about 11 hours.  When I got up to walk around, I put my pants on.   In order to go to the bathroom, I had to unplug the monitors from the machine and bring the cords with me to the bathroom.  When I walked in the halls (did this twice for 15 mins), they took the monitors off.  Then when I was ready for the epidural, they had me take my shirt/bra off and put on the gown.  It's just a normal gown that goes on your arms.  I never even had it tied in the back; so it was not around my neck.

  • Once I had my epidural, I could not have cared less what I was wearing.Or about anything else that was going on, for that matter.

If you have an epidural, you're going to be in bed. You might have your gown hiked up to adjust your monitors (which will be on your bare belly) but you'll have blankets to keep yourself covered up.  My epi made me cold, so I was glad to be covered up. Most hospital gowns have strings to tie them together at the neck, you can just tie them loosely or leave them untied if you're laying in bed.

  • The gowns I wore were open in the back (the flaps overlapped and tied) and also had snap buttons on the shoulders so you could open the neck really wide (actually it's so they can run any IVs up your arm really easily).  Also had flaps/slits on the front for easy breastfeeding.  I wasn't monitored continuously but when they did have to monitor they just pulled it up in the front.  It was actually pretty comfy and convenient to wear.

  • Same as previous posters....gown tied in the back / had openings in front for nursing / snap shoulder. The epidural catheter goes in your lower back and they tape it and the tubing runs up to a pump . You will also have a catheter in your urethra....but you won't care or feel them place it because of the epidural. I had an IV line for antibiotics and fluids in lower arm.  The monitor was around my belly under the gown secured by a wide Velcro strap.

  • Here's a picture of me in my gown (please excuse the fact that I look drunk...I had just gotten out of my c/s and I'm sure I passed out shortly after this). Like PP mentioned, you can see the snaps up the sleeves. I also have an IV in both arms (most people just have it in one). The wires coming out the top of my gown are heart monitors since I had a c/s. I was also a little different in the fact that I had internal monitors. The external ones weren't getting good readings, so they were replaced with internal. So it was nice that I didn't have all of that strapped to my stomach, but in exchange I got 2 more things coming out of my crotch. You can see I have a blanket on my lower body which was nice since your gown ends up hiked above your waist the majority of the time anyways while they are adjusting monitors and what not. After a while, all modesty goes out the window though and you don't care what the gown is covering or not covering. Mine was also fairly loose in the neck area, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't tied any where in the back.
