Babies: 9 - 12 Months

wwyd?

We took my DS to the doctor earlier this week because he was acting like he had shoved something up his nose. I couldn't see anything, his doctor didn't see anything, and the ENT she refered us to didn't see anything, but "recommended" that we schedule a scope to be sure, saying if there is something up it he could choke/aspirate the object, and to go home and discuss it with DH and decide. I waited a day to watch to see if he stopped fussing over his nose, (pulling at it, whining, blowing out, and sticking his finger as far as he can on one side only.) He continued the behavior into today, and so we decided to just call and go ahead with it. We had to fill out paper work before they could schedule the appointment, and when my H called to schedule it, they told him the 5th, or 8th of June.

Now at this point I am all, wtf? If it were truely neccessary, wouldn't we need it done asap? Is it just a CYA thing that he is having us do it at all? I am concerned, because his behavior and annoyance with his nose isn't normal, but I don't know what I should do. Should I assume it is unneccessary? Should I take him to urgent care? Should I wait it out until the appointment? I would call his pedi, but the office is closed for the holiday weekend.

Re: wwyd?

  • Ahh.. Idk, that is really weird though. If they mentioned the possibility of him potentially aspirating something that might be in there, then yea... I would think they would get it done right away.

Honestly I think you should trust your instinct. If his behavior is really unusual and seems like it is bothering him, then I'd probably go to urgent care-  with that being said there were a few times when my instincts said "Holy crap! We need to go to urgent care right now!" and then 8mins later everything was totally fine.

What's the worst that can happen with this though? You go to urgent care because you are worried about your baby and it turns out everything is fine? Ok then, at least you will have the peace of mind.

Sorry I can't give you a more direct answer, but I can see why this would be concerning to you.

  • Get it done.  ASAP.

JMO.  DS1 has a birth defect where foodstuffs can get caught in his esophagus.  When something gets stuck that he can't dislodge on his own, they remove it via scope...  immediately!!  For aspiration issues alone, I wouldn't feel comfortable waiting.  Ask questions and keep asking until you get a closer appointment or answers that calm your fears!! :)

  • I would get him in to have the scope done ASAP. Because of the risk, that's what I would do. Hope your LO is okay and that everything works out.
