Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Transition to crib questions...

My DS is 13 weeks old and we are trying to transition him to the crib from the Rock N' Play. He is a pretty good sleeper and sleeps 5-6 hours at night. He swaddle him up, rock him and once he falls asleep we put him in the rock n' play. He stirs a little but we just rock him for a few seconds and he is good to go.

Now we are trying to transition him to the crib and it's not going well. During the day I will swaddle him, put him to sleep, and once he is out I'll place him in his crib. He stirs a little, but goes to sleep in a few minutes. The problem is that he wakes up after 25-30 minutes.

What am I supposed to do then? He doesn't cry, just grunts for a while. I was thinking of just takin him out and playing with him or whatever an once he is sleepy try again. But my DH says to let him cry it out...but I thought that was for before he falls asleep, not when he wakes up.

We need some help. Any advice?

  • How old is he? Sometimes I leave ds alone for a while and he will fall asleep. If he starts to cry I give him the paci...I only pick him up if he is really crying hard. I forgot what age I started to let dd cio.

Honestly it may just take time. I know that is not what you want to hear, but I can vouch for this. My son would not sleep in his crib for the longest time. He would always sleep in his swing, on my chest, or in bed with me. Every time I put him in his crib, he would wake up even if he had been asleep before I put him in there. Now he's been going down in the crib no problem for at least a month, probably closer to 2 months. I never thought it would happen. Of course, he starts fussing every 2.5-3 hours and usually will eat at these times, but after I feed him I can put him back in the crib no problem. Hang in there, he'll sleep in there eventually!

  • You may want to start working on putting LO down drowsy, not sleepy. We started this about a week ago, we go through her routine and when it's done, we plop her down and turn off the light and allow her to put herself to sleep. Trust me, it terrified me at first, I was a big nurse-to-sleep-er, but she took right to it (I may have been totally lucky). The first night or two, she was like - um, excuse me, what are you guys doing, and fussed a little, so we stayed in the room, would reassure her and offer her a pacifier, and then leave again. It only took a few nights for her to know that it was on her to go to sleep, and now it takes a matter of minutes. The whole point is so they know where they are when they wake up because they fell asleep there and aren't as likely to freak out. It could be that your LO is getting into a lighter sleep cycle, thinking "hmm, this isn't my cozy Rock n Play," waking himself up, and then crying because he's confused. GL!!

  • I have no advice b/c we are going through this too!   After a couple of rough nights I gave in and put him back in the RNP and he has slept great for the past 2 nights.  While I am glad for the sleep, I know we just went backwards:(  Can we just call Fisher Price and ask them to make a bigger one?!
