Is it possible for your water to break and you just don't know it?

I know this sounds like a silly question but I've been thinking about it all day.  As I was laying in bed this morning (around 4 am), I turned over to my other side and felt a slight popping sensation.  Nothing too big, but enough to bring my awareness to it.  I got up and went to the bathroom and everything was normal... no gush of water, no trickle, nothing.  So I went back to sleep thinking it was all in my head.  Anyways, it's been on my mind throughout the day today (Did I dream it?  What was that if it wasn't my water breaking? etc).  LO has been following her normal patterns today. She's moving around like crazy and I haven't had any extra discharge than normal in my panty liners.  I've even did the smell test and it seems normal to me.  I guess I'm just wondering is it possible for your water to break and you not realize it?  TIA!

  • If your water broke, even if it was slowly leaking, you would be wet... mid-way through my pregnancy, I was worried that my water had broken (it was just discharge, in the end, that had increased a bit) because my underwear were wetter than usual. One of the office MWs told me to put on clean underwear with a pad (not a panty liner, but a pad) and if it was soaked through within 30-60 minutes, then that was a decent sign. Of course, I am still pregnant, so it was not. Since your post did not mention feeling anything leaking at all, I'm sure your water did not break! But if you're not sure, then try the pad thing or call your office to ask them their thoughts! Good luck!

  • I had a slow leak that would seal itself with DD, and I knew I was leaking something. I could feel it.

  • You would notice wetness even if it was a small amount. I was "trickling" a few days before my water truly "broke" For me, it was quite obvious when it did and after the fact it was a constant trickle up until I gave birth.

Lol, that, too. When my water broke during labor, there was no mistaking what happened. During a contraction, I felt and heard (inside) a POP, then there was a HUGE gush of water. I was also in transition, so it's not common for that to happen anymore. Gotta say, until your membranes rupture, contractions aren't that bad.

  • My water broke last Sunday and I didn't know it. I felt a popping sensation and thought perhaps the baby had dropped or something. I had a small gush like when you sneeze but that was it.  When we went to the hospital 4-5 hrs after that popping sensation because I had a feeling I was in labor due to the back pains I was having, they asked if my water had broke and I told them no.  When they did the cervix check, they told me it had.

So for me that's a long answer to say "I think it's possible."
