Non milk protein food ideas?

Just found out dd is milk protein intolerant. So far dr said just avoid foods you know it's in but don't read labels. They want to see how tolerant she is to it in processed foods. It seems to be in everything? How do I figure out what to avoid and she does not like soy milk I tried flavored soy milk too she hates it right now I'm giving her oj for calcium but she doesn't drink a lot. Any advice to a newbie to this. She's 25 mo

Re: Non milk protein food ideas?

  • I would be reading the labels...that is terrible advice from a Doc....geez! The reason you need to read them is because if its labeled "lactose free" it doesn't mean its dairy free.  Casein (casinate) is milk protein and its put in many many products

My DD loves hemp and almond milk.  We use the Almande Yogurt and the So Delicious coconut milks and yogurts.

I started following a lot of vegan blogs when my kids were diagnosed and it help tremendously.  I know its tough, because alot of the comfort foods are out.  And restaurants are pretty much out too.  Hopefully she will get to the point where she can tolerate a little goats dairy and she can have the cheese for pizza and macaroni.

We use a lot of hummus/avocados/nutritional yeast to fill teh "cheese" void.  GL!

  • I also wanted to mention that I give my kids an Omega sup, calcium and vit D sup on advice of a naturopath (at this point I am taking her word for it, since when we visited the allergist I knew more than he did)
  • One more question, is all vegan food milk protein free since it should not have milk in it? We live near Philadelphia and there are lots of vegan places and we even went someplace today that had vegan ice cream I wasn't sure so we didn't eat it.
  • Vegan implies no animal products, so it's safe to say that there's no milk protein.  Like pp said, I would read labels and avoid all milk protein.  You can always start adding it in to test her threshold.  mspimama.com has great recipes that are all dairy/soy free, and  I like rice milk more than soy and almond.  It doesn't have the fat that your DD needs, but you can help her get fat through other foods.

  • Well that's kinda strange. I read every label. Even things that say milk free have milk in them (lactic acid, caramel coloring). What bizarre advice.

  • this is a good site for avoiding dairy -https://web.mit.edu/kevles/www/nomilk.html#badingredients

If you know she can have tree nuts, then try almond milk.  Absolutely love it!

My son drank rice milk in a bottle but when we got rid of the bottle he wouldn't drink it any more so we pretty much use fortified OJ, but same like you -not enough. So we give him cereal with rice milk for a snack and his oatmeal in the morning has rice milk. Also we give him a calcium gummy vitamin. All of that together is enough.

Also, if she can have almonds -almond butter has some too. My son use to be able to eat almonds and that was a huge part of his diet

Foods labeled vegan or Parve/Pareve (a Kosher designation) are milk protein free.

DD drinks coconut milk with 30% RDV calcium.  She loves the vanilla, but is not that wild about plain.

Our Allergist told us that she could probably tolerate baked milk, like butter baked into pastries or milk in bread.  We have only recently been trying them and it seems to be hit or miss whether she will get a rash.

Also, I would definitely read lables like PP mentioned.  Some foods will trick you, like Soy cheese.  Which actually contains casein!

  • Dd always has bumps on her arms we were told it's eczema. She had it. From day one so we never questioned. She eats baked goods. Her issue seems to be GI related she throws up when drinks milk or eats cheese. She also pushed really hard for bm's even if they Are soft. She was only doing a bm once a week that's why we took her to GI dr They put her on miralax and said switch off lactaid milk and all milk protein main foods.  She still pushes really hard but has a bm everyday. First week we had to do enimas to help her go. So now she doesn't throw And we see GI dr on 2 weeks again

We are vegans because of DS1's dairy allergy.  What started off as just avoiding dairy has turned into a lifestyle change.  We've never looked back.  So, I think this is good advice; although, I disagree with the comfort foods.  There are so many hearty, savory, filling vegan foods, that you really can get away with kicking mac n cheese out the door.

    Good luck!! :)
