Trouble TTC

If I can't have a baby, then it's time for a puppy or two (N3TR)

Okay...I admit it. I've been looking at puppy pictures half the day. I've wanted to get a dog or two since I first moved out of my parents' house (7 years ago) and for a while had two black labs and a pitbull (that were all adopted by my old landlord when I moved back to southern CA in 2008 and couldn't take them with me).

Now that I'm soon to be completely on my own again and treatment is being delayed until at least January (if not longer), I think it's time for me to get some pups. With that being said, I've never been a small dog person (as they always turned into coyote bate back home as all small animals did), but I've always been a large dog person. The apartment complex that I live in has a 25 lb weight limit for pets so I can't have any of the breeds that I absolutely love. What recommendations do you ladies have for smaller dogs that aren't going to be the annoying, yappy ankle biters?

Me: 25
Dx PCOS (June 2006, re-confirmed March 2012), Anemia (May 2010-Still fighting to correct it), Fibromyalgia (May 2011)
Initial b/w - normal
HSG (March 2012) revealed right tube open and looking great. Left tube deformed with hydrosalpinx.
Lap (April 2012) Removal of left fallopian tube. Right tube open and viable, but "rather enlarged." NO evidence of endometriosis...Uterus looks beautiful and "very capable" of carrying a pregnancy!
October 2012 - Clomid 50mg + trigger + IUI = BFN
With all factors taken into account, RE is recommending IVF. Planning on moving forward with treatment as a single woman using DS by Summer 2013.
After 17 months of trying, Surprise BFP #1 2.15.2008 | EDD 8.7.2008 | Lost 2.16.2008

Yay for getting a doggy! I have a schnauzer. He was supposed to be miniature, but he's not - I think the miniature version is about 12-15 lbs, and mine is 23 lbs. He's very cute, and not annoying and yappy at all. Also, he's hypoallergenic, so in case a future LO has allergies, it's one less thing to worry about. My mom has a toy poodle that's 13 pounds and she barks so much I wanna kick her sometimes (obviously I won't, but I want to!,) She's also hypoallergenic.

TTC 17 months, Dx: MFI (morph = 1,) Endo. Surprise BFP after HSG!

  • My sister has a cavalier king charles who is pretty cool. She never barks and she's not annoying, but she does love to sit in your lap.  She pretty much thinks she's a big dog and runs around with our 60 lb mutt.  They can have a lot of health issues though (heart probs, etc) and their fur is a little too long for me to want to deal with.  They can get very raggedy looking if you don't brush/trim them a lot.  Plus I've known several other people with the CKCs and some of them are very yappy and high maintenance.  I think it is all in how you raise them.

  • My friend has a cocker spaniel. She s super cute but does like to bark. If you get a small dog you have to teach them not to bark. Yes it's possible.

I have pomeranians. The breed is known for being yappy but mine aren't. We taught them young not to be yappy :) And they're fluffy and snuggly and awesome. One is really mellow and laid back, the other will try her best to lick anyone within 100 miles. BUT she's not yappy as she does it ;)

  • We have a puggle and she is the sweetest dog in the world! She's on the calm side of the breed, but almost never barks and is pretty calm. We adopted her from a shelter and are so lucky to have gotten such a great dog.

  • I love medium to large dogs in general... So, I don't know much about the 25lbs and under group.  (Not that I don't like them, I just prefer the big guys)

Check your local shelter or rescue group... or https://www.petfinder.com/index.html.  They will all have quite a variety - even some pure breds, if that's what you like... Personally, I prefer mutts.. Smile

Check this site out for breeds that may interest you... https://www.allsmalldogbreeds.com/small-dogs.html  or https://animal.discovery.com/breed-selector/dog-breeds.html .

  • I do not have any dogs - but the ones I have always been a fan of are the long haired chihuahua.  they would definitely meet the weight requirement.

  • We have a pomeranian mix. He is super cute, super fluffy, and very energetic. He's about 20 pounds. Our other dog is a Jack Russell Terrier/chihuahua mix. She is my baby and I'm pretty much the only person who likes her.

  • Thanks for all the suggestions ladies! I've always owned larger dogs, so the idea of having a small dog is foreign to me.
