NBR Vent: Work "unfairness"

So, back story.. I work for a national company.  I love LOVE love the company and most days enjoy the work I do.  I miss my old job with the company, but it is what it is.  There used to be 3 people in my position, and we split up the support of the country.  There are 2 now due to someone leaving and the decision not to backfill.  I was concerned that it would be too much, but there reasoning was that things were OK while I was on maternity leave.

I've always been a lot more overwhelmed than my counterparts, and we each have a certain number of people we support.  I've always had more.  I did the math today because it's really getting ridiculous and in 2011 I supported 45% of the markets.  In 2012 with 2 in the role I support 65%.  Why am I supporting 2/3 of the country AND have more projects than my counter part?!  This is bs!

I have a meeting with my bosses boss (monthly 1:1) in a few minutes, so I'm really anxious to hear her response to my concerns!

That's all - I just needed to vent a little, but only have time for a little vent.  Believe me - I have a lot more in relation to this to vent about!

I think the way you are approching this is 100% correct.  You did it with well thought out data that is as clear as day.  PS - I think you should ask for a 10% raise too (spit the differnce of 20% extra work)

    Good luck!

I agree with Vigurl.  You have good stats to back yourself up.  Plus, I think it is good to vent to us before you go to your boss...sort of lay it out there in a less stressful environment so you don't go to your meeting with an impulsive hot head.  Good luck!

  • Thanks ladies!  She double-booked herself so now my meeting is in 2 hours.  That gives me more time to stew and vent.  The good thing is that I have a coworker that is a great venting board.  She doesn't understand why I'm just now finally saying something, because I've been the one doing all of the extra work for 18 months now.  On top of that, my counterpart STILL doesn't totally understand her job and I do some of hers as it is!
  • Definitely not fair and good for you for doing something about it! Unless you are getting paid a helluva lot more then the work should be split 50/50 between the two of you.

If anything I'm getting paid less, but that's due to COL.  I'm in the midwest, with average COL and she's in Boston - MUCH higher COL.

Anyway, I'm even more p-ed off now.  My concerns were essentially dismissed and I was told things will get better in July after things settle down.  Whatevs.  I'm going to talk to my direct boss and get his advice.  He can't determine how much I cover, but he can help me out to some degree.
