I've started thinking about my repeat CS coming up. Hopefully it will all go as planned and this baby won't try to make an early appearance. Is there anything that I should/could ask for during our hospital time? Has anything really changed in the policies and how things go with PP at Northside in the last 3 years since I had Owen?
Last time I was induced so we checked in the night before, labored all day, and ended with a CS at about 10:30 pm. After Owen was out, they let me see him, then he and DH went to recovery while I was stitched up. I saw them again in recovery for a few minutes and then they went to the nursery while I was in recovery. After I was done there, we all went to our PP room. Between the drugs and labor, I am foggy on the details. I was pretty exhausted by the time Owen was actually born. I didn't try to BF until several hours after he was born, partly because it just didn't occur to me and partly because the nurses didn't say/offer anything about it. I have seen that lots of CS Mamas BF while in recovery. How does that work since I was totally flat in recovery with Owen and my epidural made my arms numb?
i never made a birth plan for Owen, but am wondering if I should be asking my OB about options for this one. Hopefully, I won't be so tired this time since I won't be laboring for 14 hours first. If I'm more alert, should I ask that DH and baby be with me longer in the OR and recovery? BF in recovery?
Also, any changes to the PP process? Last time we took home diapers, blankets, pacis, nose sucker, formula, etc...Is it still the same this time or should I be bringing more stuff to the hospital. I was there for 4 nights PP last time, but I delivered really late at night. Is that about the same with a RCS that starts in the morning?
Sorry for all the questions. It has just occurred to me that I need to start thinking about these things. It's gonna be time before I know it. Thanks ladies!
Re: repeat CS at Northside
three-peat, I feel like an expert
I never labored, all mine were scheduled, so I walked in and straight on to the csections. I think you will be less tired since you won't be laboring (unless baby comes early). same as you mentioned as far as procedure, you get to see the baby in the OR but then they take baby to recovery to get cleaned up with your hubbs. once you are there you can start to feed baby immediately. they will prop you up ever so slightly, it did the trick for me. with the last one, he was STARVING when I got into recovery so they handed him over right away. Finn had low blood sugar so they attempted to bottle feed him right away and he had a low suck so they had to go to a tube so I wasn't able to feed him right away but Riley and Kellen I did, so I think it depends on how you and baby are feeling, but you should be able to feed right away if you want. if your arms are numb again, I would ask for assistance. I don't think that baby and hubbs can stay longer in OR but it never hurts to ask. I would rather have them send baby over to get cleaned up so you can have him/her right away when you get over there. and yes, you can still take home all that stuff! We also stayed 3-4 nights after all of ours ( actually we stayed 4 for #1 and #3 but DH wanted to go home earlier after #2 because our childcare for #1 was tricky so we only stayed 3 nights that time). But my advice....if you have good childcare lined up for Owen, stay the whole 4 nights, take the time to just enjoy and adjust to the new little one and recoup before going home to owen who is going to want to climb on you like a jungle gym. lemme know if you have any other questions!
Bailey wasn't scheduled but I couldn't progress past 1cm so I didn't really labor with him. Bryce was a true scheduled c/s in october 2010.
With both of mine, dh was handed the baby and I got to see him. Took some pics then dh took the baby to recovery. I was in recovery with dh and the baby within 30 minutes of bailey coming nad 45 minutes of Bryce coming out. Both times the nurses wanted me to do skin to skin and try nursing within minutes of being in recovery. With my epi I didn't have to lay completely flat. I was at a more 45 degree angle so it wasn't that hard to try to nurse. I had the shakes with bailey but didn't with bryce so it was easier to nurse bryce. They never took either boy to the nursery but did everything in the recovery room. I got to see everything for bailey but missed bryce's bath (whcih I'm fine with). After about 2 hours we were all taken upstairs to my pp room.
I totally agree with Heather about staying the whole time to rest. I left early with Bailey but with Bryce I stayed and I think it was for the best.
