How does the insurance coverage work as far as...

the amount of days covered in the hospital? I have written down that my insurance company (Blue Cross Blue Shield) covers 2 days for a vaginal birth and 4 days for a c section. But are those the days *after* you've give birth, or the days you were in labor at the hospital total?

I'm wondering because I go in for my induction at 6 pm on Tuesday, and fully expect it could be until Thursday that she is born. Then you have to stay 24 hours, correct? So that's four days with a vaginal birth, and I'd have to stay several days longer for a c-section. So would only two days of that be paid for and I'd have to pay for the rest myself?

  • It is my understanding that the clock starts as soon as baby is born

  • So do they cover the time spent leading up to baby? Or is that out of pocket?

They cover delivery, plus x days. It's usually 2 nights, but if you deliver early in the day or late at night, theres some give and take. Like if you deliver at 11:59, that doesn't count as night 1, and if you deliver at 6:00am, some will let you go home a little earlier. If you're hospitalized before baby, that's a whole different ball game, and doesn't count toward the above.

  • I also have Blue Cross and their standard is everything up to delivery and then 2 days after that for a vaginal birth. I ended up staying 2 extra days beyond that, and in order for them to cover it, the doctor just had to deem it "medically necessary".

  • I have Blue Cross too... They bill labor and delivery and then you get billed separately for maternity ward .....and even a separate bill for your baby's nursery stay.  The two days is in the maternity ward...not L&D.

  • The instructor in our birthing class said the hospital's policy is 48 hours for a vaginal birth and 72-96 hours for a c-section birth starting from moment of birth. She did not say it depends on your insurance so I'm going to assume all insurances would be the same... obviously if there are any other issues/problems, then I'm sure it would be adjusted.
