Crib vs Toddler Beds

How long do you plan on using a crib? When do you feel is the right time to move your LOs to a toddler bed?

With my first two they were each moved to a toddler bed at 18 months because another baby was on the way. This time that is not the case, so we will most likely keep her in the crib until she is potty trainning.

We moved DD at roughly 20 months because we were getting ready to head out of town for the holidays and wanted to make sure she would be okay sleeping without being confined. She just finally within the last six months will get out of bed on her own, though. Before that she would lay in bed and just yell until one of us came to get her!

I'm guessing we'll convert DS's crib to a toddler bed around age 2 unless he tries to climb out before then. Of course, if he is one to keep getting out of bed its a good possibility we will convert it back to a crib to keep him confined!

We plan to keep him in his "cage" as long as we can! If he starts to climb out I guess we'll switch over.

My DS never climbed out so we dropped the rail and let him stay in it till he was 3. Then we set up his twin bed. We will do the same with DD.

This is actually big on my mind lately. Second crib or toddler bed? I suppose I will decide much closer to baby #2's arrival, depending on what I feel will be best for Mason. If we go with toddler bed, he will be about 18 months old (baby is due when he is 17 months, but he will sleep in my room for at least a month.)

M&M we have been debating this too. I think we will move Auden to bed after the new baby is here. Auden slept in our room until he was 5 months old, so we have some time to make the transition.

We had the same issue. My 2 are 2 months apart, but we opted to getting a second crib because Tims crib "converted" to a full. Nick still technically sleeps in our room anyway, but he slept in the newborn crib we have until about 5-6 months.

I remember reading that 3yo was a good time to transition...but that might have been to a regular bed? I cant remember now.

We have the cheapie Ikea crib that converts to a toddler bed. We hope to have #2 when LO is ~3yo or so....so depending on how she is, we may just move her from the crib, set up as a crib, to her big girl bed, so the baby can have the crib. We don't want to buy a 2nd crib.

when she tries to climb out. With her sister that was 16 or so months old. She's already scaling the Little Tikes picnic table in the family room so we'll see

her crib converts so it won't be a major deal.

Thinking about this to. New baby due when DD will be 17m or so. #3 will probably be in our room till about 6 months, so probably when DD is two we will put her in a bed/toddler bed, unless she climbs out before that. We shall see.

DS still sleeps in his Nap Nanny...so at this rate he will be in a toddler bed when he is 5!
