June 2011 Moms

I think I may be the first june mama to...

move up to a toddler bed!

I know, I know, we're insane. M's crib just isn't safe anymore; there's a few screws that keep coming loose and it has gotten worse over the past month.  When I told DH that we need to buy a new crib, he suggested we just take the plunge to toddler bed.

It is very low to the ground and has half side rails. M has already figured out how to climb up and down. We bought a gate to section off her bed so she can't go wandering around.

We'll see how it goes. I am super nervous because everything I have read says wait as long as possible (age 2.5-3). Wish me luck!

  • Yikes! Ours has a warning that says "The minimum age of the intended user shall not be less than 15 months..."

  • Wow.  Totally not flaming because I believe everyone makes their own parenting decisions, but honestly, I wouldn't do that.  My 2.5 year old is still in her crib.  I feel it is the safest place for her.  She would be EVERYWHERE if not.
  • You are brave! Good luck tonight!

  • Good luck!  We may be next because my little dare devil managed to climb out of his this morning, but I am hoping to put that off as long as possible

  • Good luck! DD was 16 or 17 months when we moved her into a toddler bed and it wasn't an issue at all for us :)

  • A friend of mind moved her kid to a big boy bed at 14 months, so you aren't that far off. And like you, it was to save money and not have to buy another crib. You do what you have to do! That being said, I was so incredibly in love with my crib, that when my mom was 8 months preggo with my brother (I was almost 3) she "broke" my crib and told me that I have to move to a big girl bed because the crib was in pieces (she actually took the crib apart and showed me the mess). I never put two and two together that as soon as my bro was born, the crib magically fixed itself :-P

  • We're actually starting it tomorrow. Its set up in the living room right now. I wanted to give her a day to adjust to it before we throw her in. I know it's a gamble on how she'll do, and if its awful we'll get a new crib instead.

With the gate, it'll give her about 1.5 feet around the side of the bed. I'll put down a little extra padding in case of falls, but it is seriously such a short distance.

She doesnt move around in her sleep a lot. We've bedshared most of her life, so she's used to a bed. And I doubt she's attached to her crib since its only used about half the time really.

Anyway, thanks for the encouragement, prayers, and warnings! We'll see what happens. I'll report back in a few days!

  • Best of luck to you!  If it doesn't work remember you can get a crib that transitions into a toddler bed, so you aren't just buying a crib that you will only use for a year or so!  The earliest we transitioned was 22 months, and the girls did great!  I waited until 2.5 to transfer (they weren't the climbers DD's were).

  • no flames from me.  my girls have never slept in cribs.  i honestly think this has been for the best.  if your LO is happy in the toddler bed, that's awesome!

  • Hope the transition goes well. We are probably going to be moving Connor to a toddler bed by the end of the year...depending on when his sister/brother will need the crib. Good luck!!!!

  • As long as you section off so no wondering can happen and you shut the door, I wouldn't worry.  I bet our parents had us in big beds by now.  Good luck!!  I would just be sad that my baby is growing up more than worried.

  • I worked at a Montessori school for 6 years, and the babies slept on floor beds.  The parents were encouraged to do the same at home...I know a lot of my coworkers did it too.  Itv worked out really well or them!  I thought about it, but chickened out, especially since we live in a split level and our LO is super clever (I'm not sure how long gates and kiddie locks will keep him contained.)
