Two Under 2

Diapers for a newborn and a Toddler (CD) - long

I also posted on the CD board, but figured maybe some of you with experience diapering 2 under 2 could help with some of this, even if you don't read the CD threads.

Hello!  I have been cloth diapering DD since she was about 8 months.  So we skipped the newborn stage.  I have all Fuzzibunz OS right now (21 total).  It works great - for one baby.

Baby #2 is on the way, and I want to CD from the start this time.  I'm looking at maybe getting 24 prefolds (since we could also use those later for various things) and a few covers.  Once he's big enough, I'm hoping the Fuzzibunz will work for him as well as with DD.

Question #1:  Do I buy all 24 prefolds in the orange - edge, newborn size - or should I do half newborn/ half small (yellow edge)?

Question #2:  Does 24 prefolds seem like a good amount for a newborn?  I currently wash diapers every other day to avoid the ammonia-pee smell from my 16 m.o.  I realize that this means I will probably be doing laundry closer to every day rather than every other, because if he uses 12 per day, I'll have about 12 clean and 12 dirty each day.  Is it even doable to do laundry every day with a NB and toddler? Stick out tongue

Question #3:  For anyone else who is using a pocket diaper on a baby and a toddler at the same time... (once DS grows out of NB prefold/cover stage) about how many do you recommend having?  I know they "suggest" ten per day for the baby, and DD probably needs about 6/day right now (8 on extra poopy days)!  Am I looking at needing 32-36 pocket diapers??  I don't mind saving up now and buying a few more as I go along... but I don't want to overbuy and regret it.  [sidenote:  I want 4/5 kids, so the CDs WILL be used again].  Does anyone make do with 24 diapers for two kiddos?  I'm going to be a SAHM after school lets out this year, so it might be more feasible for me to do laundry more often once I'm home.

Question #4:  Covers.  I've heard about 4 covers per day for newborns, since you can re-use them before washing.  Do you recommend getting only 4? Also, do I get these just in NB size, or half NB half size 1?

Sorry this is so long!  Basically, I would just like to do prefolds/covers until DS can fit into our OS pocket diapers.  Everyone tells me a newborn would be swimming in the the first couple of months.  I'm thinking I'll go the prefold route because it seems like the cheapest way of building a separate newborn stash.

Re: Diapers for a newborn and a Toddler (CD) - long

  • We use a different kind of CD, but I'd recommend about 30 prefolds.  Even if he goes through 12 each day, you need something for him to wear while you are washing, so the extra 6 gave me 1/2 a day to get the laundry done.  We had 12 covers, but I could have totally done with 6 (we got a good deal on 12).  The covers didn't get dirty all that often (we BF, so there wasn't much in the way of poop to deal with).  Sorry I couldn't answer all your questions.  I hope that helps!

  • I currenlty cloth diaper both of my kiddos.  I have 36 prefolds for the baby.  I think I'd get more than 24.  I started with orange edge but probably could have started with yellow edge since my baby was 9 lbs.  I actually have more like 6 covers but could probably get by with a few less.  There are a few covers that will take you all the way until your baby will fit into one size diapers.  I have blueberry mini coveralls which I really like.  I also have some thirsties duo size 1 diapers which work ok.  I currently have around 24 pockets just for my toddler and have a hard time making it until I have more diapers.  I could never diaper 2 with these.  If cost is a worry maybe you could look into prefolds and covers to supplement your one size stash?  I also worry about using fuzzi bunz on two kids.  Wouldn't they be very difficult to change between children?  I do find that I am doing laundry every day because otherwise the loads get too big.  Some people do say they do laundry every other.  I have heard of people using fuzzi bunz on newborns although I have not tried it.

  • We were given a full stash of fitteds and covers (motherease). Those only fit the toddler and we have at least 24 diapers and 6 covers, we probably have more than that but there are some that don't work as well. We also have prefolds and Bummis covers. The Bummis are a sized cover. We bought 3 NB size (my son was super small when we brought him home and they lasted him a while since he's got pretty small hips), those were fine for the NB days because I was home and washed frequently. We also kept disposables on hand for laundry day and overnight (he was a terrible sleeper and feeling wet woke him up). When we bought the next size up we got 5 covers and it's enough but just barely. I find 3 is enough for around the house but if you want to stash them in the car, diaper bag etc then more is nice.

We don't worry too much about the sizes of our prefolds. They were all given to us as gifts and we have a variety of sizes. We just fold them down if they're too big and go with it. If I were you I'd get the small size and fold over for NB covers. We have LOTS of prefolds but we use them for the toddler as well since we had them before. Anyway, good luck and keep asking questions.

I can see what you're all saying about probably getting closer to 30 prefolds.  The Mothering By Nature store by me sells some I like that are in 6-packs, so this works.  I don't see Baby #2 being tiny as I was a 10lber myself, and my BF'd DD grew super fast, so I guess I'm anticipating similar with my DS.  I'll probably stick with the yellow then, and fold down like you suggested.  Makes sense anyway, as he'll be a boy... and might need the absorbancy up front?  =)

I usually do at least one load of regular laundry a day anyhow, so I could see doing diapers more frequently than I do now... but like you pointed out, if I got behind I wouldn't want to be caught without diapers on a laundry day!

Six covers seems to be the popular choice... and they're so cute, I might just go with that!  Has anyone every tried Rumparooz?  I was comparing them to the Bummis in the store... but I haven't had time to "research" (google?) them yet.  Oh, I've heard good about the Thristies duo also.  I looked up the "Blueberry mini coveralls..." but I kind of like the snaps on my FBs.  Am I going to like velcro better for a newborn though?

As for supplementing prefolds for older babies... I guess I'll just have to say "we'll see."  I don't know if I'm going to like using prefolds as much as my Fuzzibunz... so that's why I anticipate using Fuzzibunz on both.  If this does end up happening, I figured on some type of color system (boy colors vs girl colors) to differentiate between the sizes.  In a pinch, it wouldn't be hard to switch one of DD's OS diapers to fit LO... but I wouldn't want to be doing it all the time.  When I built up my fuzzibunz stash, I got a big mix of colors so this is do-able I think.  I don't mind getting more fuzzibunz... but if it ended up being a crazy amount that I'll need, it might get a little costly!  ...there's always potty training for the toddler though, right!?

  • We have not yet had experienced the joy of two in diapers, but here is our plan.  DD is currently 19 months old, and I do laundry twice a week with 24 pocket diapers.  We used two dozen orange edge prefolds and 6 covers with her and I washed every day or day and a half.  We never bought a larger sized prefold we just used them as inserts when DD outgrew the newborn covers and began fitting into pockets. I'm going to buy another two dozen pockets with inserts so that after the newborn stage I can continue washing just twice a week (we use SunBaby and they are quite inexpensive and have held up very well) and probably a dozen more prefolds simply for the sake of replacing the most worn out ones that I'll be retiring as cleaning rags.

  • We are using cd on a 3 month old and an 18 month old. We have 24 and it's plenty for us, but we just started about a month ago, and my kids gave so far not been frequent poopers, so that tips the scale. Also we use disposables at night so we can wash after they go to bed. We use the bumGenius 4.0s
