A/S - Fluid around heart.... :(

We just finished our anatomy scan.  I'm not exactly sure what to think.  I haven't googled yet...who is giving me a cookie?

Anyways, it took her forever to do all her measurements.  The baby would not cooperate at all.  She then ended by saying that she wanted to check with the radiologist to see if he wanted anymore pictures.  RED FLAG.  My husband asked me if he could go.  I knew something was up, so I said no.

The cardiologist came in and said that there is a fluid pocket next to the babys heart.  All organs, including the heart are functioning correctly.  Blood is flowing perfectly.  Heartrate of 140.  This pocket is not affecting the health of the fetus, he just does not know what it is.  The pocket is also not attached to the heart in any way.

We are being sent for a level II u/s next week.

Anyone know of a similar case?  It's pretty uncommon and everyone I asked is not familiar with it.  Ugh, what a day.

  • I have no idea, but I am giving you a cookie for not googling it. I'm giving you a whole box. please don't fall in the google trap. We'll pray it's nothing and maybe someone has some insight, but FLEE FROM THE GOOGLE... my last u/s showed a band in the placenta that the doc told me not to freak out about. we're not even going to look again til 26 weeks. he didn't even go deep on explanation. so I went home, googled it, five seconds later I freaked out, shut down the computer, said a prayer and moved on. It's always the worst cast scenario on google. keep your blood pressure down, find comfort in whatever manner works for you (prayer, talking, burn incense, I don't care), but DON'T GOOGLE!!!
  • A cookie? I'll give you an entire cake for not googling this.  I've no experience with anything like this so all I can do is offer T&P's your way and pray that the level II u/s brings better news and answers.

  • Aww girl you can have ANYTHING you want for not googling.  Remember that if you do it, it will make you stress which will be worse for your baby.

I'm also willing to bet that more babies than you would ever think have weird things in utero that grow up to be healthy kids and adults.  We never caught anything in an ultrasound or anything but when DS was born he had a murmur.  It resolved on it's own and now his pedi says you would never be able to tell he ever had it.

  • Thanks everyone.  I have a strong faith and am trusting in God.  My baby is safe and healthy - just with an extra pocket of fluid.  They are not worried about the babies health - they just need to figure it out.  I hope the next few days goes fast.

I already talked to my doctor, who said that the report is being typed up and will be sent to the specialist this afternoon.  They will then contact me to set up an appointment.  The hospital is about 45 minutes away - no problem :)

  • You and your little one are in my prayers. At the very least, it's nice to hear that it doesn't seem to be affecting anything as of right now. I hope everything turns out for the best.

  • You definitely get a cookie for not googling it! I don't know about this issue particularly but I have two friends who were told their babies had heart issues and then were both born completely healthy, I hope this will be the case for you too.
