So it seems like from the thread below there are a quite a few of us who would be into the idea of doing a monthly book club on this board. I figured I'd get us started (this coming from the high school English teacher--go figure!) and see if we can make a selection for a book to read in June, then have a discussion thread at the end of the month!
So...what are your suggestions for what we should read in June, ladies?
Re: Book Club - Suggestions for June?
I recommend Room, by Emma Donahue. I have already read it, but was thinking of re-reading it. The author is a lesbian, and tells the sfictional s,tory of an amazing mother and son.
I find myself thinking about it a lot when I am home with Punkin. What's important, what's not, what we really need.
Here are my suggestions:
Fiction:
Non-Fiction:
This is pretty selfish list, since these are really just the books that have been on my "to-read" list for a while.
Anyone else have suggestions?
I already read and loved Room, but yeah, I totally wouldn't mind reading it again!
I was so traumatized by this book (which is crazy unusual for me.) At Costco, my kids were playing in one of those sheds and nearly melted on the spot. I think having a 5y old boy (at the time I read it) just was too much for me - that and the plausibility of it.
Sing You Home is nice fluffy fiction (though I love Jodi Picoult books!) I would be interested in hearing everyone's thoughts since it is about 2 women falling in love and TTC - but definitely written for mainstream (ie. straight) audience.

Perfect Chaos: A Daughter's Journey to Survive Bipolar, a Mother's Struggle to Save Her by Linea and Cinda Johnson
I have read one chapter and had to fight to put it down so I could go to work.
Book description ala Amazon:
A dual memoir of a mother's and daughter's triumph over mental illness The Johnsons?mother, father, and two daughters?were a loving, and close Seattle family. Then the younger daughter Linea started experiencing crippling bouts of suicidal depression. Multiple trips to the psych ward resulted in a diagnosis of bipolar disorder, and it took many trial runs of drugs and ultimately electroshock therapy to bring Linea back. But her family never gave up on her. And Linea never stopped trying to find her way back to them. Perfect Chaos is the story of a mother's and daughter?s journey through mental illness towards hope. From initial worrying symptoms to long sleepless nights to cross country flights and the slow understanding and rebuilding of trust, Perfect Chaos tells Linea's and Cinda?s harrowing and inspiring story, of an illness that they conquer together every day. It is the story of a daughter?s courage, a mother?s faith, and the love that carried them through the darkest times. Here are some from my GoodReads to-read list:
Mudbound by Hillary Jordan
White Tiger by Aravind Adiga
Girl Trouble by Holly Goddard Jones
Bloodroot by Amy Greene
Bitter in the Mouth by Monique Truong (same author as Book of Salt, which I liked a lot)
Salvage the Bones by Jessmyn Ward
The Tiger's Wife by Tea Obreht
Blueprints for Building Better Girls by Elissa Schappell
I also want to read Room but I agree that it would be good to pick something no one has read...
I admit I don't do well with fluffy but I'll give anything a shot.

I also have "The Tiger's Wife" on my to-read list, along with "The Marriage Plot" by Jeffrey Eugenides, and "The Sense of an Ending" by Julian Barnes.
I'm willing to try anything, but I tend to be a slow reader, so I'm not sure if I'll make it through our pick but I'll try.

The Time Traveller's Wife is a truly beautiful book - I'd re-read it if there is any interest in getting it on a 'potentials' list. If you've watched the (horrible) movie, don't let it dissuade you - the book is really lovely.
I am also open to reading any of the others.

Two Mommies Healing Hearts
If you like dark & morbid you'll probably like Room. It is the story of a boy (age 5) who has lived his entire life in "Room" which is a garden shed where his mother (abducted 2 years before his birth) has been held captive for the last 7 years. The story focuses on his relationship with his mother and his innocent perspective on what is really a very terrifying situation. It's a great read!
oh i will check it out.. thanks
