Is this dumb?

N still is not napping in his crib.  It's my own fault.  He cries every time we try and I haven't had the time or energy to try on a regular basis.  That's an excuse really.  I could have made the effort but honestly the thought of it exhausts me mentally.  But seriously, the child is nearly a year and still napping in his swing (which he is really grown out of) or on me Tongue Tied

So the time has come.  I got him an Anywhere chair for his birthday and it's going to go where the swing currently is so I won't even have that option any more.  And sleeping on me, as much as I love it, just isn't practical - I need that time to get work done.  So I'm going to suck it up and deal with a couple of weeks of misery to get him napping in his crib.

He takes 2 naps a day - 10:30 and 3.  He always nurses to sleep for a nap.  The issue is that 3 days a week, the nanny is with him for his 3:00 nap and my boob is with me.  Therein lies my question.  Should I pump a bottle so she has a better chance of trying to get him to nap in the afternoon?  Any other suggestions?

  • No suggestions here. Just wanted to let you know that you are not alone!! Mine ARE a year & still won't nap in their cribs either. They sleep in their cribs at night, but I can't get them to nap in them. They both still nap in their swings or bouncy seats.

  • I cant believe either of you can still get them in their swings. Ash started trying to jump out of his at about 4 months!

We had to do the same with Ash, although at a much younger age.  He went a bit without a good nap, but now he loves his crib. In fact he wont sleep anywhere else! It will likely be rough, but for sure worth it!

I would pump so he at least has that comfort at nap time.

The only reason he sleeps in his swing is because he's asleep when I put him in it.  As soon as he wakes up he tries to get out.

You are not alone. B only naps in is swing as well and sleeps most of the night in his crib and some of it in my bed. And, the crib is still in our room. Yes, bad I know.

Oh well, they are only little once and I have 2 lbs left until he reaches the weight limit on the swing!!!

I would try to pump a bottle to help with the naps if it were me though =)

I guess I could see that. We stopped using ours not long after MH called me at work and said "just so you know, it only takes Ash 1/2 a second to get out of the swing." We weren't too interested in seeing the acrobatics for long after that!

This must mean that you have to hang out wherever the swing is when he is sleeping in it then! When do you ever get anything done?

  • My DD was still napping in her swing until she was like 16 months old. No worries. I'm impressed you still get two naps out of him! I only get one from each kid. Thankfully at the same time. Smile

If you're worried about him getting to sleep without your boob just try the milk in the bottle thing. If it doesn't work you can go from there, but I'd at least try and see how it goes.

Fortunately my work office is about 5 feet away :)  It's just a desk in the back of the living room.

  • I would pump a bottle for the nanny to give to N (or a sippy if he'll take it) and see if he'll sleep in his crib if she lays him down in there. Maybe she can get the ball rolling.

  • Remember how hesitant you were to do sleep training at night and then once you finally did it how happy you were? It's the same thing! It's going to be a week or so of suckiness, but in the long run it's going to be sooo worth it!

Yes, I know!  I'm being silly, aren't I?  I just know nap training is going to be harder, but you're right.  It will all work out in the end.  :)

I agree with this, and if you can't pump enough, are you willing to do a little almond or rice or cows milk?  We are supplementing/weaning one bottle a day because my boobs are sooo done! GL!

Oh sure, I'm fine with WCM.  I actually just hadn't considered that.  Duh!  Since it would only be 3 bottles a week, I can probably pump enough but this is definitely a good idea regardless.

  • I'm useless as usual :p but would just like to say that while James is an amazing crib-all-night-long sleeper, in 12 months he has never napped in his crib.

I nap with him* or he naps on me. Embarrassed

    * I work from home but not an intense schedule so I admit to being lazy/giving in to fatigue. It's certainly not practical as I COULD be getting things done for home, work, anything... but looking back, I wouldn't change it.

Going forward, now that's a problem. lol

    Best of luck!!

  • I know back when they were younger, people said that we should have a slightly different nap time routine than bedtime routine. We have almost the same nap time and bedtime routines (just that the bedtime one is a little longer with dinner, bath, etc). Before a nap, I nurse him, sing to him and put him down just like at night. I did nap training soon after we did sleep training and it's true that it was a little harder with naps, but now he's so easy and it makes my days SO much easier.

I'm not sure about the pumped bottle vs. just going in to nurse him and put him down for his 3pm nap. Maybe try the pumped bottle for a week and if it's not working, re-evaluate? Good luck! You can do it :)

Becca just started sleeping in her crib for naps this week. She was in the swing up until now. She's also sort of transitioning to one nap a day Sad I guess it works out because she's tired when she goes down for a later morning nap so she fights the crib less. She started on Mon and today she went down with almost no fuss at all - she was also mostly asleep when I put her down, but in the past she would have been up screaming the second she hit the crib. Today she just rolled over and went back to sleep!
