April 2011 Moms

switching from a bottle...

so DS is still using a bottle for whole milk 3 bottles a day, one at 5am (back down to sleep until 7) another one at 1 for nap and another one at bed time...

he's using a water sippy but i'm wondering the best way to get rid of the bottle ASAP as i'm pg and don't want to deal with washing bottles!!!!

did you go cold turkey? how do you transition from bottle before sleep to when they wake up?

i'm not sure how he'll do without one as he's pretty addicted.

Re: switching from a bottle...

  • We were kind like you at about 12.5 months...roughly 3 bottles a day.  I didn't go cold turkey until I found a cup that he would drink milk from.  Once he started drinking milk good from the cup (he was always good with water in a cup) I took the bottles away.  He hasn't had a bottle or any milk in the middle of the night since mid april and we haven't had any issues (sleep wise) come up.  Cold turkey worked best for us since he was attached to the bottle for comfort.

DS was still getting three bottles a day up until about 2 weeks ago.  We dropped the afternoon one at daycare cold turkey.  We told the DCP to offer a sippy of milk instead and if he refuses, then he doesn't get any milk.  The morning bottle was next.  He definitely faught me a lot of mornings and I would just give in and put it back in a bottle.  Now I just fill a sippy of milk and set it on the floor for him to come and drink when he feels like it.  He'll drink 90% of it within 30 minutes of being up.  I think I was forcing the sippy in the moring so he was automatically refusing.  The night time bottle was last (he had his last bottle two nights ago).  I just offered the milk in the sippy, again leaving it on the floor, and he drank it all.  TOnight i actually handed him the sippy and he drank the entire thing!  I stressed out about it the entire time we were weaning but it's something that takes time and on their own terms (or at least you want to make it feel like it's their own terms).  HTH

When we completed the transition from BM to WCM, I switched him cold turkey to the sippy.  Like you, we had been giving him water in the sippy, so we didn't have any problems transitioning him to milk in the sippy.

We went cold turkey.  She did fine.
  • I started with water in a sippy when Giselle was 6 months.  Once she started getting a hang of that, I replaced one of her formula bottles with a sippy.  Then it went up to 2 sippies of formula & so on that by the time she was 12 months - she no longer used bottles.

did you give him the sippy in his bed or in his room or just in the kitchen before taking him for a nap or bed?

he gets his bottle in bed so i'm worried about that...i will try for afternoon nap time and give him a zippy before taking him upstairs to bed and see how he does. i'm worried because it seems like the bottle calms him down and he is dead tired as soon as he finishes.

although...i dropped the morning nap bottle and it was no problem so maybe i'm over thinking it! haha

  • DD still take a bottle twice a day.  Mornings and before bed. I think I can drop the bed time bottle and it wouldn't be a big deal but she's pretty hooked on the morning bottle.  I'm actually not in any rush to take it away just yet.
