Breastfeeding

Can I get my supply back after 2 days off?

So on Monday I got really sick with food poisoning. I couldn't do anything except basically throw up, so my DH ended up feeding DS with a bottle most of those two days. I probably fed him myself 2-3 times each day. Now I'm feeling much better, and of course want to go back to feeding DS, but I feel like my supply is a little low (I don't know for sure, but my boobs feel deflated, not as full, and he seems a bit fussy when eating. Still has wet/dirty diapers though). Can I use my baby to increase my supply, having him feed often? Should I take Fenugreek? Or is it too late for us? When I got sick I decided it was fine if it ended my nursing time with him, my initial goal was 6 months and I've almost made it that far. But now I'm sad and don't feel done at all (and my DS isn't done either, he adores nursing and hates bottles).

WDYT?

  • It is not too late to continue BF. If you feel like your supply has taken hit, by all means take Fenugreek. 2 days off shouldn't impact your supply significantly as you did continue to BF when you could; just be prepared to nurse on demand for a while to feel more comfortable that you are supplying your LO with what he needs.

  • I was sick vomiting Sun night. My supply was down Mon and Tues and was back by yesterday. I did keep feeding my DS (pumped on monday when he was at daycare) through my illness though.

  • Your supply probably did take a hit, but you can probably get it back too =) Just to warn you, I had norovirus earlier this year and it took over a week before I was pumping the same amount as before.

However if you can nurse on demand, I hear nurse-ins are great for this sort of thing =) Just hang out with baby nonstop for a few days, and offer the breast frequently, for as long as he wants to eat.

  • Yes, especially since you did nurse some. Nurse on demand and offer extra. Drink lots and lots of water and eat well. And pump after feeding for a few minutes if you have time.

  • Thanks ladies. Luckily I have a baby who loves to nurse, whenever. I'm just going to offer it often over the next few days. And I did start taking fenugreek too.
