Uterine Irritability?

Has anyone been told they are having uterine irritability? My NST strip showed lots of very small spikes close together, or just long short slopes. The MW said it's not really contractions, it's irritability. This morning my whole belly really feels like it's stuck in one long mildly painful contraction that never really ends.

I wonder what "irritability" produces as opposed to contractions. Maybe nothing.. maybe effacement or positioning?

Re: Uterine Irritability?

  • I have regular irritability :-) But not uterine! Never heard of that. Does that mean they will be more likely to induce you sooner if you go past your due date?

  • I have an irritable and tough uterus. It just means things like intestinal discomfort, a full bladder, laying wrong, or the baby moving can make me have mini-contractions. At the beginning, gas bubbles (tmi) would give me major cramps. The tough uterus part is apparently not a bad thing, because it means my contractions are stronger. My MFM said, "You have painful cycles, don't you?" when he was doing the amnio. My uterus contracted and bent the needle (it's flexible). All those years of horrible period cramps and I finally know why!
  • When I went to Maternal Observation she used the term irritability. I said does that mean a contraction. She said they were real small but they can still help things along.
