???? about mucus plug

I know this might sound like a dumb question or maybe its been answered before but do you HAVE to lose your mucus plug before your water breaks or you go into labor.....

I've heard mixed stories about this!?!? I have a whole lot of nada going on with my LO at the moment (he hasn't moved out of his current position in 3 weeks). Still a finger tip dialated and 90% effaced but just wondering about the who mucus plug LOL

A HUGE THANK YOU!!!! I've been wondering the EXACT same thing... I was worried it fell under the stupid question catergory & has always been scared to ask... I'm starting to get a little worried...nothing has been happening & I'm 39 weeks.. & I'd feel so much better knowing that my water can just all of a sudden break with no other signs leading up to it! Big Smile

I never noticed losing my mucus plug with DS#1. I had bloody show about 2.5 days before I delivered DS. My water broke at the hospital when I was ready to push. I don't think you have to lose your MP to go into labor.

No. I know lots of women who never saw their mucus plug. Anyways, you can lose it and have it just go in the toilet and never know it happened.

I was 2 cm dilated and 50% effaced at my appointment 2 days before I had my son. My water broke at home, and I didn't lose my mucus plug until I gave a urine sample at the hospital.

I now wondering in the middle of the night when I have to use the bathroom for the 37th time LOL I don't turn on the light LOL maybe its happened and I don't know about it (hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm)

I never saw mine with the first. If it came out while I was in the hospital, I have no idea. They broke my water during my labor.

This time it's just small bits every day for the past few weeks.

Not only do you not have to lose it... but you can also lose it and have it grow back before you go into labor (and possibly lose it again... or not!) I asked my doctor several weeks ago when I thought I was possibly losing mine.

What is the difference between losing your MP and bloody show? I think I may have had bloody show yesterday, but I'm just not sure. It was pinkish mucus with a couple spots of darker red that looked stringy.

Technically, you aren't 'supposed' to have your water break first without contractions, but it does happen and that is what happened with my first. So PROM was my first labor symptom and I never saw my MP or had a bloody show etc.
