What is a wakeful period?

I'm a new mom and have never really heard of...wakeful period? I've been reading other posts and people have mentioned this a bunch of times. About a week ago my little one who would only get up one time a night has gone to getting up 3x to almost every hour. Most of the time she is barely awake when this happens. Just fusses like crazy. She's not gassy, not hungry and her diaper is barely wet. I can see that at times she is trying to roll over. We tried to switch her from the swaddle-me to the halo sleep sack (sleeveless since it's so warm). It worked for one day and then went downhill. I'm talking fussing/awake every hour on the hour. So, we switched to the sleep sack with wings and will try to slowly transition her to the sleep sack with no wings. My biggest worry is that she's starting to roll over (Well, tries to but hasn't done it yet). The other night she rolled to her side and freaked out because she couldn't get back. So, is this normal? Is this a wakeful period? How long does it last? Do I just tough it out? During the day she is super happy and naps normally (in her swing). Thanks for any advice!

  • Whoa...you and I must have been typing this at the same time.  We are going through it too...

  • So, when I say 'Wakeful Period' i am referring to how long she is awake during the day between naps.  A typical baby should have a wakeful period of 1-2 hours between naps before going down for their next one, otherwise they will get fussy.  My DD's threshold is about an hour.

It sounds like your LO may be going through the 3 month growth spurt -- although you mentioned she is not hungry?  The growth spurt lengths can vary.  My DD was STTN up until about a week and a half ago.  She was then waking twice a night, but two days ago fell back into her STTN routine.

ETA: Ok so apparently my definition of wakeful period is different (haha) After responding I googled and I see there is also a 'wakeful period' where they get up multiple times at night...I'll shut up now...  :-)
