Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

What would you do if you LO has a fever of 102.7?

DD had a fever of 102.5 at around 5pm tonight.  She just wanted to be held and laid around, so I could tell she wasnt feeling well.  A couple of times, she said her head hurt.  I gave her tylenol.  I checked her temp every hour after that and right before bed at 8pm, it was down to 102.1.  So, it had gone down, but not much.  I put her to bed and she went right to sleep.  Usually she sings to herself or talks to herself for at least 1/2 an hour.  At 10pm, I heard her acting a little restless, so I went and checked on her and her fever was back up to 102.7.  So, I gave her more tylenol.  I am going to call the pedi first thing in the morning.  How high is too high of a fever to where you would question if she should be seen before the morning?  I thought the tylenol would bring the fever down more than it did.

  • My doc said anything about 105 was a big deal. She also said to rotate Ibupropen and Tylenol every three hours. If the fever ISN"T responding, not even .2 then you need to call the on-call nurse. Any response is a response.

You can try alternating tylenol and ibuprofen every 3 hours. DD usually responds better, and quicker, to ibuprofen. As long as she's eating/drinking/peeing/pooping/acting mostly normal I probably wouldn't be horribly concerned. 104 is usually my breaking point.

Another vote for ibuprofen. Also, try a tepid bath.

104 and not responding to medication warrants medical attention, IMO.

  • The first time DS had a fever of almost 103, I called the pedi and expected them to say "zomg, go to the hospital!"  Turns out they said even if we went to the hospital (it was during the night so pedi wasn't open), they wouldn't do anything different than what we were doing at home.  We alternated tylenol and ibuprofen, kept him as hydrated as possible and mainly let him sleep. Hope she feels better soon!

ETA: Hope SHE feels better soon - I didn't look at your siggy before responding, sorry!

  • Pedi wants to hear about anything over 103. If it is after hours, she wants a call to th exchange.

  • C was at 102.4 and went up to 103.5 before his fever broke. We called our after hours nurses line, they said that if it gets near 105 go to emergency room, but other than that to give him acetominophen and ibuprofen (childrens tylenol and motrin), like a dose of one and then 3 hours later a dose of the other, and not to give a second dose of the same item for six hours. It worked after a day and a half of freaking out. Also, do lots of liquids.

ok, thanks for the advice ladies!  I will just keep watching her, taking her temp and giving meds.

  • I just had this scenario.  DS had a temp of 103 for 2 days and I called the pedi and she wasn't worried at.all.  She said to only bring him in with a temp over 104.5.

Just keep doing what you are doing.

Ditto everyone else. Get some ibuprofen and try alternating that and the tylenol. I've always found that ibuprofen works better and for longer.

DD had a fever of 104.7 when she was 7 months old and we happened to be at the pedi's office when it registered that high; it was in the 102-104 range regularly for two days before we took her in. They gave her Advil, kept us there for a half hour to make sure the fever responded, then sent us home with instructions to keep the fever below 103 by alternating meds or giving her lukewarm baths. Lots of fluids are key; use a dropper if you have to. It's nervewracking, but babies' fevers can get high due to any old virus.

    Hope she feels better soon!

  • We were told to bring him in if it is over 105 and not responding to a rotation of Tylenol and Motrin. The highest it's ever been (at night) was 103.6. I was freaking out, but apparently that's not very high.

  • 102.7 isn't high enough to freak out or go to the doctor unless you have an infant.  For a toddler, just give tylenol every 4-6 hrs like it says on the bottle and if it hasn't gone down in a day or so, then I would call the doctor.  Both my kids have had fevers that high this week.  We've just been giving tylenol and making sure they drink plenty.  They are finally back to normal.  I'm sure you'll be seeing a lot of fevers in that range over the course of her childhood, so don't worry too much.

I tried this a few weeks ago when DS2 had a high fever.  I thought it would make him feel better.  Normally he loves his baths, but with a fever, he started to shiver and continued for about an hour afterwards.  He eventually fell asleep in my arms.  I felt so horribly guilty for putting him through that.  A few days later, I caught the same bug and when I got a fever and had chills, I could only imagine how uncomfortable a cool bath would be.
