Vaccinations while pregnant

My DH and I are traveling to China in a few weeks. I called my OB a month ago to see if I should take the vaccinations or not. The nurse said absolutely not. Then on Monday, I had an appointment and my husband asked her to make sure. She recommended that I take Hep A and Typhoid. However, she doesn't have the vaccines and told me to go to my family doctor. After a call in, they referred my to the county health department to get the vaccines because Typhoid is a specialty vaccine. When I made it to the health department they won't give me the vaccines because I am pregnant! I even had a doctors note and they would not do it. So hopefully I won't get typhoid! Anyone else have to take vaccinations for travel?

Re: Vaccinations while pregnant

  • Ug so confusing! Well on my first pregnancy appointment I was surprised that they told me I would have to get a T-Dap vaccine. Which I thought was odd. Obviously she knows I'm pregnant that's why I was at the appointment. But yes vaccines while pregnant sound a little scary.

The Embassy doctor at my post in Asia only requires T-Dap for all pregnant women if not up to date. They also recommend the flu shot in general. How long is your trip? If it is short, I would not worry about vaccines. The risk is pretty low for a short visit. Just be cautious and you will be okay. The typhoid vaccine is rough (as far as I remember) and I had to take pills on an empty stomach for a certain amount of days. Even then I think you only have 70% protection or something. I would skip anything you can. I wouldn't want to introduce that crazy stuff when pregnant.
