eczema help, please :)

My son's eczema really flared up last night, and he seems pretty miserable about it today :(. I I think it is itching him or something. I'm using his two prescription ointments on the affected areas (1 is a hydrocortisone and 1 is an antibiotic) I'm also putting his lotion on his whole body (vanicream). Anything else I can do? It's on his face mostly, more mild on his arms and legs. What are your eczema tricks?

Re: eczema help, please :)

  • When DS's eczema flared, we had him take a long bath (no soap until the end), then used hydrocortisone on the patches and slathered him with Vaseline to seal in the moisture from the bath. Not sure that would work if it's mostly on his face though. Hope he feels better asap!

  • Ty's never seems to bother him when it flares up, but I give him a room temp bath without soap, apply hydrocortisone cream and lots of aquaphor!

I'm not at all excited for the weather to warm up because it seems to be getting worse with the warmth.  I've also noticed it flares up more if the bath water is a little warmer than normal.

  • When A's flares up we use Cetaphil Body Wash and then drench him in Cetaphil lotion. He gets immediate relief!

  • For my excema I use hydrocortisone and cetaphil lotion (in a tub). The alcohol of pumped lotions caused you to dry out more.

Also, I know this sounds crazy, but an old school derma that I had told me to do it. Try Crisco, like as in vegtable shortening. That is what I did for a long time before I was introduced to cetaphil.

  • Thanks for the tips ladies. I think it has a lot to do with the hot weather yesterday, all we went out for was a quick trip to the drugstore, but he was obviously hot. I'll give a bath a try, he loves them anyway so it'll at least keep his hands away from his face. Also pick up some cetaphil. Thanks. I hope he's clear for his birthday party!

  • I'm sorry your son is having bad flare ups.  Ds had awful eczema I was constantly fighting.  I just had to continually lube him up with earth mama baby lotion and only dress him in loose fitting cotton.  Surprisingly he hasn't had one flare up since the weather got warmer.  I'm hoping he's just grown out of it!

  • J has severe eczema. Aquaphor, Vaseline...neither worked. Our allergist suggested Hydrolatum which is an over the counter cream but kept behind the pharmacy counter at CVS. Also get hydracortisone OINTMENT, not cream....it sinks in deeper and faster. We take long baths (no soap) and then slather the hydrolatum all over. We apply the ointment at night and as spot treatments throughout the day.

    Good luck!

  • I'll look into the hydrolatum. The cream we currently use is OTC, but behind the counter as well.
