May 2012 Moms

Measuring Small?

I'm kind of stuck in the middle here with the due date. I have been told June 1 but possibly May 30 so I figured I would just post here because by this time many of the May moms will have more experience and advice.

Based on my June 1st due date, I am 38 weeks and yesterday I went to my weekly checkup. My doctor has not seemed too concerned about my progress until yesterday. I'm still closed but I guess my DS is in the ready position. She measured my stomach and said I was measuring small but because of how my stomach feels she wanted me to come in for an ultrasound (which is tomorrow, Thursday).

Has anybody else been in this situation? Is it bad to measure small at this point? The appointment finished up pretty quickly after that so I didn't get to ask a lot of questions. I guess I'm a little confused about getting an ultrasound so late in the game. I remember asking her at the beginning of my 3rd if there would be any more ultrasounds and she said not unless it was medically necessary.

Anyway, just curious about your thoughts and experiences on this.

Re: Measuring Small?

  • I measured right on track until the last couple of weeks when I stopped growing. My OB did an u/s just to confirm that my fluid levels were ok and that LO was in the average range size wise, keeping in mind that growth u/s just provide estimates and can be off by quite a bit. My son was on the small side (6 pounds, 4 ounces), but otherwise perfectly healthy.

  • I never measured past 35w. My OB isn't concerned at all.
  • With both my pregnancies, I would measure ahead one week and then two weeks behind the next week. I had 9lb+ babies each time. With this pregnancy, I was two weeks behind at my 39 week appointment. My baby was born over 9lbs 21 inches long. It was just the baby in a weird position.

  • My doctor told me the same thing when I was about 36 weeks and sent me for an ultra sound too. At the time they told me baby was about 6 lbs and would be between 7 and 8 lbs at birth. Everything looked great and when she was born she was 7 lbs 12 oz. I wouldn't worry!

I always measure small. It is because I am a smaller person and have small babies. Fundal measurement is pretty inaccurate. Size of mom, size of baby, baby's position, fluid levels, mother's core strength etc. are all factors and there is a wide range of normal. It is important to rule out any potential complications though so hopefully the ultrasound will ease your mind.

  • I measured 33 wks at 38 weeks because my baby was actually small. I delivered him via induction because of it and he was 5 and a half lbs. however I measured small at all my appts past 30 wks. Sometimes baby can switch positions or drop and cause you to measure smaller.

  • Thanks for the info girls :-)

I'm still not sure what exactly the need for an ultrasound was really for lol I guess I will have to wait until my next appointment with my doctor next week to see what she says about everything.

Bonus: I can expect a 8 pounder...if he ever decides to make his way out of the womb lol
