Transitioning to 1 nap already?

I've been noticing on Lexi's daycare sheet that she's only been taking one nap (in the afternoon) for the past week or so. They keep trying to get her down in the mornings, but she fights it tooth and nail and never ends up going to sleep. They asked me today if it was ok to go ahead and transition her to just the one nap (basically just stop trying in the mornings) WDYT? It seems soon to me, but she's ok in the evenings (definitely more tired but not a mess) and her night sleep hasnt been affected.

Re: Transitioning to 1 nap already?

  • Stella has been doing one nap most days for quite some time now.  Hasn't been a big deal.

  • We've been down to 1 nap for about a month now. We haven't had any problems, he's still sleeping well at night, and his 1 nap is usually an hour and a half to 2 hours.  We had to rework his feeding schedule a tiny bit (since now he's sleeping through lunchtime) but he just went with it.

    Good luck!

  • DD has been transitioning since 9 months. I TRY to put her down in the morning for a nap b/c she does give me tired cues, but it's about a 50/50 chance that she'll take it. If she skips it, then she takes one long late morning/early afternoon nap for like 2-3 hours and then she's up the rest of the day until bedtime at 7:30/8 pm.

  • He's been fighting the second nap for awhile now. He easily takes 2 at home, but this week is down to just 1 at school, from 11:45-1:30. He used to take that one plus a late nap at 4:30 but now they can't get him to sleep then. He's come home in a good mood anyway, he's definitely very tired by bedtime but it seems to be going okay.

  • Em only does one nap at DC now. She's been for a while actually. Sometimes she takes a nap at home after DC, but not usually (I pick her up at 2:30).  As long as she doesn't seem tired, it's fine.

About a week ago Caraline started transitioning herself to one nap a day. She went from taking two hour (sometimes less!) naps to one 2.5-3 hour nap. I will DEFINITELY take that!

Obviously every kid is different, but my basic (teacher/nanny) knowledge on it is that it usually happens between one year and 18 months and they just transition to it on their own.  It also usually happens like ajc's girl.  They sort of still sleep the same amount of time, just all at once instead of split into two.

Olivia is still napping twice, but I'm thinking she may be going down to one nap sooner rather than later because of our situation--the little boy I nanny for being out of school.  She's a pretty good sleeper though (12 hours at night, 2 to 3 hours in naps), so I'm not too worried.

  • When C is with my dad, he still takes 2 naps, but at daycare, he only takes 1.  His one nap at daycare is usually a little over 2 hours.

I will say when he is on the one-a-day naps, he is crankier in the evenings.  ESPECIALLY if he doesn't stay down for at least 2 hours.

For example, yesterday he only slept for about an hour and 15 minutes.  By 6, he was in complete meltdown and was asleep for the night before 6:30.  Literally collapsed on my chest as I picked him up after a diaper change- no dinner, no jammies, no night bottle.

I am lucky and will have him at home this summer so I can experiment.  I also think if he does a 1-a-day at home, it will be a longer one since he's not with 8 other children.

  • DS has taken one nap at daycare for about the past 2 months or so. However, they are really long (usually 2.5 to sometimes almost 4 hours) so I'm not worried. He usually sleeps from 10ish-1ish.
