All Free and Clear on Baby Clothes?

So my friend told me that I HAD to wash all my baby clothes in Dreft for the first 6 months.

I currently use All Free and Clear.  There are no dies, perfumes, etc.  The bottles says its "#1 Recommened by Dermatologists for Sensitive Skin".  Is it ok to use on baby clothes?  I don't want to assume.

Any dermatologist will tell you to use free and clear detergent if you want to go with what people are least likely to react to. We use Purex Free and Clear on all of our stuff and our kids' stuff.

Dreft is heavily scented/perfumed to give it that baby smell. It is marketed as a baby detergent, but it is really a gimmick.

Most doctors will tell you to use what your family uses on your baby's clothes, since you'll be holding your baby against your clothing anyway. If you find that your baby reacts to your regular detergent, then start exploring other options. Since you use free and clear already, I'd stick with that.

  • We use All Free and Clear as well since LO was born. I have no plans on changing anytime soon. Anything free and clear is recommended and I think most, if not all brands make a free and clear detergent.

  • I've always thought that Dreft was overrated. I don't even like the scent at all. We've always used a free and clear to wash all of our stuff.

  • It's definitely OK to use on baby's clothes. We've switched to it since we had the baby for all of our laundry.  Dreft is overpriced gimmick from the makers of TIDE.

Free & Clear is fine. In fact, it's BETTER than Dreft. Dreft is a gimmick; and it has scents and brighteners, neither of which should be on baby's skin in my opinion.

  • We use Purex Free and Clear on all of our family laundry, including little one's clothes.  Anything that is free of dyes and perfumes is better for baby than even DREFT.  It's a rip off.

Dreft is garbage. Any free/clear detergent is just fine.

That's the only detergent I've used for years.  LO has been fine with it.

  • Dreft is nasty smelling...don't do it.  Don't pay the price to join the hype.

    Free and Clear is PERFECT!

  • I will admit...I bought into the whole USE ONLY Dreft for the baby's clothes with DS. I have now changed to the All Free & Clear for a couple of reasons...DH hated the smell of Dreft. And 2nd, I hated trying to always find a deal...that stuff was expensive and over rated.

Yup. Your friend is sadly uneducated. A free & clear detergent is much safer for baby skin. Avoid dryer sheets as well.

  • I bought a box of Dreft when pregnant and washed all of DS's clothes with it. I wasn't impressed and I had no idea why my mother had ever raved about it. We started using cloth diapers when DS was eight weeks old, and those get washed in powdered Tide. He's never had a reaction. Once I used up the Dreft I just used the Tide we use for the rest of our laundry and it was never a problem.
  • Dreft smell makes me ill, ugh. We use all free and clear
