Vitamin A craziness

ok, So as a daily routine as any other woman I Have skin care products that I use on a daily basis. Aveeno, stilla- for tint under my eyes and hand sanitizer for work. I know the Aveeno was "safe" meaning it had no Vitamin A in it and I also got the seal of approval from my OB. BUT the stilla and the hand sanitizer that Ive been using regularly for about 2 months I just so HAPPEN to check the ingrediants and BAM VITAMIN A all up in my products!! IM freaking out!!

I did call my doc. and the receptionist is such an A** that when i asked to speak to a nurse she asks to what regards I told her, she relyed the message, but she did it ALL wrong. She told the nurse I was taking VIT A supplements. Then when I told her it was my skin care products she said "oh thats fine" I replied "NO, the OB told me to not use any products other than FOOD that had Vitamin A" she said "Well if thats what he said then dont" ohhhh the frusration, I hung up the phone in her face...

 SO im coming to you all...What have your DOC's said about vitmain A in your skin care products. IM 25 weeks BTW.

    Lurking from First Tri -

    I actually sell skin care, so I have learned a lot about this since several of my clients (and now me!!) are pregnant.

    Basically Vitamin A is known to cause birth defects and SOME skin care products have a very high concentration of vitamin A as their main ingredient. This would be anything that says Retinol, Retin-A, etc in the name. It's great for skin because it is good for age spots, acne, wrinkles, pretty much anything - just not so great for babies.

    Products that have Vitamin A in them - but not as their main ingredient and not in a highly concentrated form, should not be harmful. However, I have still discontinued use of all vitamin A products in my regimen because it makes me feel warm and fuzzy.

    Sooo...if I were you, I would just stop using the products with Vitamin A, but don't beat yourself up for using them in the first few months of pregnancy. As long as you weren't using a product that has Vitamin A, Retinol, Retin-A, Cortisone, (all forms of Vit A) as the main ingredient, you should be fine. I would also mention it at your next appointment.

    You're welcome.

    Me too because if you're using the stronger products it can be bad.

  • I asked this today at my 24wk appt! I'd bought Bio Oil for stretchmarks, but it has vitamin A in it, so I'd held off on using it. My ob basically said that the amount that gets absorbed through your skin is so small it isn't anything she would be concerned about.

    ::cringe::

    My doctor is not militant. She is an "everything in moderation" type of girl. She told me not to use skin care products that are for "anti-aging" because of their high concentration of Retinol. So I don't.

    Then again she also said it's okay for me to eat lunch meat from a reputable place.
