Natural Birth

What are you planning on wearing for water birth?

Or..what did you wear?  I know some women get naked.  I think I'd like to have some pictures, and know that afterwards I'll care what I look like.

I saw some youtube videos and some women wore bathing suits, or loose dresses.

How about you?

Re: What are you planning on wearing for water birth?

  • I got naked. FWIW, I had my only cervical check not long before I got in the water. I took off the shorts I was wearing then. I still had a T-shirt on. But it was a long t-shirt, and as I got in the water I thought "it's silly to get this t-shirt wet" so I took it off as I got in.

Afterwards, I put on an old button-down shirt of DH's so I could BF. It's an ugly, ugly shirt (purple and green plaid), but no one could find my robe. (I had a home waterbirth.) And I just wanted to hold A. and BF. I honestly didn't care what I looked like (and I didn't after J. was born either).

FWIW, the pic DH took of me BF A. in the ugly shirt where I look awful is one of my favorites. I won't be sharing that one with many people, but it's an absolutely precious photo.

I don't worry about what I look like during/after labor. At least, not until I've showered. I figure if there are pics from before then and people complain about what I look like, that's their problem. I mean, giving birth is hard work.

  • I'm planning on wearing a sports bra. It has no support at all and I got it a size bigger than I would wear because I want it to be comfortable. I just wanted something to cover my nipples! It goes on over the head, but I won't care if they have to cut it off to nurse if I'm wet. That's the plan, although hubby thinks I'll end up wearing nothing!
  • I have a black sleeping bra (so it's extra loose and soft and comfy), and I might also wear a night gown or a huge t-shirt (at least for the parts when I'm still conscious and aware of myself... I might stop caring after a while, but while I still do, I think I'll want to be covered up).

  • I was totally nude. I didn't care in the least what I was wearing by the time I got into the tub. And I do have some pictures holding DS in the tub, but you cant see anything. Once DS was in my arms they covered him with a blanket, so we're both kind of covered and anything below the water wasn't visible anyway. My hair and face looked like a mess anyway, but I'd just been in labor for 30 hours.

I plan to be nude again this time. Honestly,I think having wet fabric clinging to my skin or floating around the tub would bug me more than anything.

  • I didn't have a waterbirth but I spent a couple hours in the tub at the hospital and was naked. I didn't even think about it, I honestly wasn't thinking about much of anything except how warm the water was going to be and how much I wanted that.

I had packed a two piece bathing suit to wear in case I used the tub for labor support but I was so wrapped up in myself that nudity didn't occur to me. I was in the tub then pushing completely naked, all in total at least a dozen people saw me over the five-ish hours I was that way and I didn't/don't care.

I have pictures from it all too and actually kind of like that I'm naked. I used a squat bar for most of my pushing and the way my doula took the pictures you can't see anything impolite.

  • I just labored in the tub (my hospital doesn't do water births).  I brought a maternity tankini, but never pulled it out, I just labored and pushed in my 'birthday suit.'  I would just bring something that will be easy to nurse in if you plan to BF.
  • After seeing photos of other water births, I want to make sure my nipples are not visible in all my photos and videos. I'm planning on wearing a bikini top (very comfortable for me, as I use bikini tops more than bras anyways) and I will have my favorite sarong that I'm emotionally attached to if I decide to cover up my hips and crotch. But who knows, I've heard many women just wanna get naked so well see!

  • I wore my bikini top.  I'm glad we have photos that I don't mind showing off to anyone who asks.

  • I am bringing a variety of tank tops to the birth center, including swim suit tops. We are having a photographer and she is providing her services for free in exchange for using our pictures in her portfolio, so modesty is key for both what we are comfortable with and the "pictures you'd be proud to show anyone" style she is going for. I looked at a ton of water birth pictures to see what I thought looked my style of modest and decided that normal tank tops versus a sports bra or nursing tanks were the best fit. I did not have a water birth with DS, but I did labor a lot in the water and I wanted covering on, so I think this will be ok. For DS's delivery (in bed), I was not covered and ditto PPs that it makes me sad that those first pictures are not really shareable.
  • A sports bra probably.  Or nothing.  And I'll probably put on a thin cotton robe when I get out for the first few hours in bed of pictures/nursing/rest.
  • I'm planning on wearing a bikini top.
  • The last two times I just wore a bra by pushing time, so that will probably be the case again (at home).  In the hospital I might wear a bathing suit top.

  • i wore a (loose) sports bra i got for $3 on clearance so i didn't care that it got filthy. before getting in the tub i had on a jersey fold over waist skirt (knee length) from old navy. i was very comfy.

I have the same skirt, and I love it...wore it before, during, after pregnancy.  I envision that (before the tub, removing for the tub) and a sports bra.  I have a white nursing sports bra that I love, and I was thinking of getting the same one in black (soonish since I'm still nursing #1 so I'll get a lot of wear out of it) so I can be wearing a sports bra where my nipples won't show through, and I can nurse easily without having to take it off completely if that's easier.  Even for my first, in the hospital, the MW was adamant I take off my bra for easy skin-to-skin and there are a few photos I love that I can't really share b/c of my nipples, heh.
