C-sections

Did you have a failed VBAC?

I am about a year away from trying for #2, but I'm trying to get my mind around having 2 kids and recovering from delivery.  I think I would like to do a RCS because at least I know what to expect, but it took me 5 weeks to feel back to normal.

I thought maybe I should do a VBAC because I could possibly recover faster.  I hate to go through labor again only to end up with a C-Section.  My first baby I was in labor for 7 hours without meds before they discovered he was breech (I think he flipped during labor).

I guess I'm just looking for your story or advice.

Re: Did you have a failed VBAC?

  • I had a failed VBAC. Mine was scary but the complications probably had nothing to do with my prior CS. I went into labor on my own, had good strong contractions and was dilated to a 7 when DS started showing signs of distress and they decided to get him out immediately. When doc got me open she realized that the back of my uterus had ruptured. The location of the rupture had kept the blood pooling internally so no one knew it had happened. I am very thankful for all of the extra monitoring (of both mom and baby) required for VBACs.

Even though my VBAC didn't end well I'm glad I tried. CS recovery is hard with a toddler. I have heard though that recovery is easier when you don't labor first. Do what you feel is best for you, your baby and your family.

  • I guess you could say I failed a VBAC.

I did not go into labor with either of my last two children prior to my scheduled c/s date.

I don't think you have to decide now whether or not to have a VBAC. Wait until your body or baby tells you which choice is the best for you. You don't have to decide before you have more information about your personal situation at the end of your pregnancy.

  • I had a failed VBAC...I was being induced due to pre-e and was 4 cm, they decided to break my water and 12 hrs after was still only 4 cm and having good contractions.  The dr that was on was not happy with the midwife or myself for trying.  So for fear of infection she had me do a rcs.  It was a good thing because my uterus was paper thin and I would have ruptured if my body continued to labor.

Sometimes I guess the body just knows...now I have to have a c/s no later than 38 due to the risk of rupture.

  • My DD was an emergancy C after 48 hours of stalled labor. I had her at 7pm on Sunday and had not been to bed since Thrusday night. I had not eaten since Friday. I was beat up and exhusted. I still revcovered well, (I jokingly call my ablity to recover from surgery my super power)

With my DS, we decided not to do a VBAC for various reasons. It was a wonderful (as much as it can be) experience. It was calm, relaxed. I had eatten just before midnight and had gotten some pretty good sleep. They seem to do the schduled ones earlier in the day, so we were done and in our room by noon. Recovery was easier, even with my 2.5 year old DD runing around.

I agree with PP that you need to listen to your body, but don't feel "bad" if you don't try for a VBAC.

  • My first was an emergency c/s that I was completely under for. And my 2nd was a VBAC. IMO, I would always try for a VBAC. My Dr's were 100% against it and told me every reason I was a terrible candidate. I switched practices and it was a total 180. My birth was smooth and quick and I stood up literally 2 minutes after I delivered the placenta and walked around.

I went into it that I was having a VBAC, but if I hadn't I would have been glad I tried everything I could. I'm planning on having the same mindset this time. I want another VBAC and I'll do whatever I can to make it happen so I know if it doesn't, I gave it my best shot.

  • My first was an emergency csection. With my second I did attempt a vbac but he wasn't far down enough so they used a vacuum. When that popped off of his head they did a csection.

  • I had a attempted VBAC this last time, I went into labor on my own at 41.2 weeks, labored naturally, got to 9 OB broke my water, DS was having heart decels and I didn't progress after 2 hours. I had a rcs. the recovery this time was WAY better than my first. I would go for it especially having another lo to care for. I do not regret my decision at all! GL!
