Question about BF , where is the proof its better?

Where is their proof, where they tested BF children and FF children, followed them to adulthood and have concrete evidence that BF children were smarter, healthier and whatever else it says it does.

If this exisists, Id like to know where, only this.

I've never looked for proof. I just went off of my own theory that it's natural, it's free, and I enjoy it. I've never considered that my child may or may not be smarter or healthier than a FF baby. When I meet older kids I never wonder whether or not they were BF or FF, nor do I care. I'm not sure why either side feels the need to justify their choice. To each their own.

I agree with this, but these articles are featured on The Bump. I haven't sought out any super scientific articles, mainly because I don't need the proof, I feel it's right for my baby and that's all the justification I need.

    Yes! Thank you!

Im so tired of being belittled for quitting bfing. There's even an air of "you're not as good of a mother as I am bc you ff" on the boards here. I'm sick and freaking tired of it! My baby is healthy, fed, smart, and loved. Who cares what she eats?

  • Not sure if there is a study where they followed them to adulthood--maybe someone is doing that and it is just taking a long time? This is what I found:

    https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21660433

EDIT: I'm not here to debate ff v. bf. The OP just asked where the proof was and I wondered too so I googled it.

Yes, I do both, FF and BF--- and I keep reading reading, where everyone says its natural  and its has antibodies, but I am very curious to see real proof.

  • This is a study about antobodies in breastmilk: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12850343. I know what you mean--we hear this, but where are they getting it?

If all the presidents, famous artists, classical musicians. mathematicians and scientists in the world were breastfeed and lived to 90, then I will believe it.

  • Great question! Like PP said, not debating, but I was interested in the research. To each their own!

Found the following link, which summarizes a study conducted in 2007. A link to the study is also available in the article.

  • From a personal perspective, I was bf for two years. Granted I was two months premie but I have the worst allergies, and I always get respiratory infections :'(

I stand by my "To each their own" statement, but I'm curious. Why do YOU BF?

You're asking for proof and when people are giving you cited articles, you write things like "If all the presidents, famous artists, classical musicians. mathematicians and scientists in the world were breastfeed and lived to 90, then I will believe it."

Why ask for proof if you don't or wouldn't believe the cited studies?

I think it would be interesting to know if there is a difference, but I don't need proof that my choice is the right choice. It's the right choice for me, and I wish the same rule would apply to all the mama's out there.

  • I read an article a while back (I can't seem to find it now) that said that the benefits of breastmilk over formula are diminishing as the formula (ingredients) for formula gets better. It seemed to say that there is not a great deal of longitudinal and indisputible evidence to support most of the claims that breastmilk advocates make (smarter, slimmer, etc.) the only one that is absolutely true is that you are passing on antibodies in breastmilk and not in formula (although that doesn't necessarily mean that your child will not get sick). So I'm of the belief that they may be true or may be exaggerated.

I think it should be a personal choice and whatever works for you.

I FF and while I don't think BF babies are any smarter or healthier in the long run, I do think BM is best and that BM has more antibodies and good stuff in it then formula. BM is amazing and it's composition changes to meet your baby's needs as they grow. I pumped for three months but my supply was awful so I stopped.

Even though I think BM is best, I think formula is a perfectly adequate substitute. There are plenty of times when we won't be able to give our children the "best" thing out there. While I think these forums are definitely pro-BFing (which I think is awesome, as a society we need to be more comfortable with it), I have never felt judged for FF my babies. No offense to people who do, but I feel that a lot of times when people get defensive it's because they feel guilt about their choice. I felt guilty about stopping pumping for a while, but it's what was best for me and my family. Only H and I know what's best for our family, and no study can prove or deny that.

I want to know if there is proof its better, perfectly normal thought.

Not trying to start the "to each their own" debate and for people to start going insane. And to get all hyped up

People gave you proof and then you said if ALL of the people of certain professions (I guess the people you consider successful) were breastfed and lived very long lives then you would buy it. It seems like you require an impossible level of proof.

  • I never really looked for proof one way or the other. I figured that there is BM for a reason and thankfully my supply issues have pretty much gone away. I do agree that mom's should not be given the side eye because they choose to FF. When my doctor told me I needed to supplement b/c my baby wasn't gaining. I remember feeling like I failed as a woman. Why wasn't my body doing its job. Now, I mostly breastfeed mainly because it's convenient, free, and I want to do it. But if for whatever reason I am away and he needs more than what I pumped etc, I have no problem giving him formula. In my family my mom breastfed all of us for at least 9 months so it was just normal. My MIL on breastfed my sister in law. I can't tell any difference that is significant in my husband or her. I don't think it is fair that we get stuck in these ruts of what is better etc...I think it is best for my family to breastfeed that doesn't mean it is best for other families.

  • The World Health Organization did a study:

"The available evidence suggests that breastfeeding may have long-term benefits. Subjects who had been breastfed were found to have a lower mean blood pressure and lower total cholesterol, and showed higher performance in intelligence tests. Furthermore, the prevalence of overweight/ obesity and type-2 diabetes was lower among breastfed subjects.  All effects were statistically significant, but for some outcomes their magnitude was relatively modest."

  • I don't know if there is any proof out there, but I think because it is natural and what God intended, I'm sure it can't be beat. (FWIW, I FF)

However, I don't believe that BF babies end up being smarter etc. There are plenty of FF babies who grow up to be as smart or smarter than BF babies. I think that depends on a lot of other factors and is almost impossible to pin onto BFing or FFing.

The study mentioned above sounds good, but I would be more interested if they did a series of the same test, (instead of just one trial) in different areas of the world.

There are a ton of studies showing that breastmilk contains antibodies and other good nutrients that formula does not. I'm not exactly sure what proof you're looking for. A scientist to tell you that? I've never seen anywhere that formula is bad for a baby, just that breastmilk is better. This is coming from a FFing mom.

Would the American Academy of Pediatrics suit you? There is extensive information on breastfeeding and their recommendations and studies here (warning that it's LONG, but I suppose since you want proof you will be willing to read it all)

I also have to wonder- babies can obviously thrive on formula or breast milk- sure BM is better, but you're not harming your baby on FF. Will this evidence change your opinions or how you feed your child?

I LOVE BF'ing, but I also haven't had any problems with nursing like many women do. I count myself lucky that my LO has taken to it so well. I know the facts for why it's more healthful for her, but honestly at this point my main motivation for it is that I love the time and physical contact that we share while nursing.

This.  I do it because it just feels like the right thing for me.

We generally eat all certified organic, non-processed, natural, etc. type foods,  so breastfeeding fits in with my way of thinking.

  • Im in the 'do what is best for you and your family' frame of mind. wasn't able to breast feed my 1st due to supply issues and she is hardly ever sick. My friend BF her little boy I until he was 2 and he gets sick all the time so I think it really depends on the child as far as illness goes. I do BF my lo because I am able to this time around but I still give her formula once a day just so she's used to it and a bottle. It makes it nice for DH and I to have longer date nights and overnight trips once in a while.

  • I'm kind of getting the vibe that the OP is trying to justify not BF or wanting to BF. You asked for research and we provided it. Instead of thanking us and moving on, you are still challenging it. Whatever is your ulterior motive, none of the research in the world or our opinions can help with that. If you BF, great. If you FF, great. Do what's best for you and your baby.

Well I for one am TOTALLY OFFENDED...that lawyers were not included in this list. I can only assume it's our humility that has undermined us. Alas, if only more of us were adverserial loud mouths, maybe then people would see our worth. We'll have to try harder to not be so meek and humble, as we're generally known for undervaluing ourselves and hesitating to spark an argument.
